Description
I picked Buffalo as the place to send Smith to because they only have 1 goalie under contract next year. This gives them a B level goalie prospect for next to nothing. Knowing Hollands negotiation skills we probably get “Future considerations” instead of even a 7th round pick but here’s to hoping. Worst case for Buffalo is they put Smith on waivers and he clears and is in the minors.

The Ottawa trade I’ve had some mixed reactions from both fan bases. For Ottawa fans they don’t think sending both goalies at the TDL in one deal is ideal. But Ottawa has pretty good depth in goalie prospects and they would still have Gustavsson to recall or potentially get another temp rental. With Murray being terrible the 2 years prior and his $15M cash owed the next 2 years they might wanna sell high before he potentially slumps again. That’s the big downside for the Oilers. They risk 6+M cap hit for a guy who could decline again. I think it’s worth it cause I think he can still be a #1 goalie. Ottawa probably brings back Foresberg in the offseason or go for Husso if he isn’t resigned by STL before July 1st. Then with JBD I have him at 3rd currently on Ottawas depth chart behind Zub and Thomson but not much ahead of Guenette. But Ottawa still has Zaitsev for 2 more year after this year and they drafted Ben Rodger in the 2nd round in 2021. I see them keeping Zaitsev for at least one more season then maybe try and offload his contract and get a rental before Guenette is ready to be a full time NHLer.
Ultimately if Ottawa decides they don’t want to trade JBD ( wouldn’t blame them) and keep Murray and maybe move him in the offseason for a better return if he keeps up his play or keep him as their #1 I’d settle with a Foresberg deal. Wouldn’t get a 1st or Lavoie only a conditional 2nd( would also have conditions based on the Keith deal cause it may become a 3rd) or a 3rd and a lower end prospect but I could deal with that. I’ve been so disappointed with Hollands decisions at the TDL the past 2 years and I feel like a blockbuster deal would be awesome. Don’t see them doing 1 for a forward or defencman so goalie it is.

Every other deal picks/prospects can be adjusted a bit it’s no big deal kinda just going off of others I’ve seen.

Lines when healthy
RNH McDavid Puljujarvi
Kane Draisaitl Hyman
Benson McLeod Yamamoto
Foegele Ryan Kassian
Nurse Braun
Kulak Ceci
Keith Bouchard

That line of Benson McLeod and Yamamoto was great in the few shifts they had together vs Tampa last night. I honestly can’t believe Tippett never tried that line EVER not even one shift. They played great together in Bakersfield and I’m glad we got to see it in the NHL.

edmonton does not want matt murray at all. I would say edmonton would have some interest in forsberg especially considering they signed him.

RNH is a 3C now he wont be going back to LW. Edmonton is going to likely acquire another scoring winger this TDL or in the offseason.

I think players like Kulak or mark Pysyk are the caliber of Dmen edmonton will get.

Sabres fan here
-highly doubt we give u a 5th
-and i don’t see ANY chance we’re remotely interested in that prospect. We have Levi AND Portillo about to sign- & they’re both ripping up the NCAA. Meanwhile, the prospect u wanna give us is in the echl bc he can’t hack it in the AHL
-i think we’d much rather just have a draft pick

Why not?

Since April 1st 2021, Murray has a 0.926 SV% which is top-5 in the whole NHL (among 82 NHL goalies who played at least 10 games)

Need an even bigger sample size?

Since February 4th 2021, Matt Murray has a 0.913 SV%, which is 23rd (among 82 NHL goalies who played at least 10 games)

Problem with this proposal is it doesn't consider the Oilers cap situation the following 2 years

I sure wish Murray's salary was lower (but not that big of a deal outside of Melnyk's pockets) but Sens don't do this trade.

The oilers would have almost 17M in cap space for next season. If they move Kassian and Keith retires ( hopefully) that would put them at 28M.

Murray has a history of being inconsistent. With that contract you don't take the risk.

I'm not an expert but people have said it is also something with murray's style that makes him particularily risky in the modern NHL.

Ok then I'd say Murray would be a good gamble for them. He wouldn't cost too much to acquire because of AAV

I'd say maybe Klefbom and a pick

Which is mainly due to him being injury prone. Like I already hinted, yes that contract is too high/risky

Also, like I have shown with these stats, his performance in Ottawa has been wildly criticized but it was unjustified for the most part. That had more to do with fans in general not understanding the goaltending position and how "team defense" is directly linked to goalie numbers.

Even then, he has had pretty good stats if you look past the first 7 games with Ottawa (I watched these games and the team was terrible defensively. Any goalie would have been shelled)

Well, you could say that I am bit of an expert as I have been a goalie for decades. There's nothing wrong with Murray WHEN healthy. Problem is that he doesn't seem to be healthy all the time... You need to be very athletic to play that position and in great shape. He has had concussion issues and you can tell he had mechanic issues too. No idea what is recurrent or not as I am not a doctor and don't have an access to his file.

But his positioning, his angles, his overall technique, stature, etc, everything is pretty good to great. You'd wish that his glove would be better but frankly, most goalies get scored the most on that "hole"

Add Barrie to the trade and if I were the Sabres GM, I would give you the 3rd and 5th for Smith and Rodrigue.
