Make the 4th line useful again

Created by: NMAvsFan
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 26, 2022
Published: Feb. 26, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The 4th line is a flaming pile right now and needs a lot of work. There are multiple ways to do it; here's one that involves some relatively minor but impactful trades that makes over the bottom six without costing a lot. Here, we're waiving NAK, Helm and JJ to make room.
Trades
1.
COL
  1. Järnkrok, Calle ($1,000,000 retained)
SEA
  1. Jost, Tyson
Additional Details:
Jost has another year left at the same price as Jarnkrok so no need to add for the retention but if it's a sticking point, you give them a 6th then move on
2.
COL
  1. Stastny, Paul ($1,500,000 retained)
WPG
  1. Kaut, Martin
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (COL)
3.
COL
  1. De Haan, Calvin ($2,250,000 retained)
CHI
  1. Clurman, Nathan
  2. 2022 5th round pick (COL)
  3. 2022 6th round pick (COL)

De Haan is probably going to get a 3rd at 50% retention, he blocks a ton of shots and a lot of teams will be looking to improve their PKs.

I could see that and I think the Avs would do that for a guy that plays really well defensively in a 3rd pair role.

Hawks can get better then that for Da Haan, possibly a 2nd with 50% retention.

getting rid of Helm from that 4th line would be a start.

Jost Maltsev NAK was a good functioning 4th line, why is bednar getting cute with Helm and MacDermaid on it

Yeah, that would be better. Sakic needs to make some roster moves so Bednar plays the guys that need to be played.

I have no issues with MacDermaid being the 13th fwd, hes been useful as 4th liner in a limited role.
Helm just needs to go

Bednar said he intentionally was mixing lines and pairings to see what would work in case they had to make changes in the playoffs. Jost, Helm MacDermid doesn’t ever need to be revisited again. MacDermid just can’t play in games that the other team wants to skate. I think it might be fair to say a significant portion of Jost’s success last year was Nichushkin. Helm is washed, he looks done.

Jost still is jost....guy trys hard, process is there, no results. Never hurts you at the minimum.
He is an ideal 4th liner. LOC is a tweener, 3rd or 4th, same as NAK.

I have no clue why they wont just make Maltsev the full time 4C, IMO he stole that job from Jost already. He should only be a winger from now on

It’s funny I was thinking the same thing last night especially watching the 4th line just get crushed in the first period. The 4th line on this team has to be capable of not getting crushed and at the very least give the team 10 minutes of neutral hockey. Literally guys like Maltsev, Kaut and Bowers need an extended look and not just a game playing 6 minutes. Helm is done, MacDermid needs to be saved for those physical teams, but man has Jost regressed.

Yeah but at some time the process stops mattering and results are required. I agree Maltsev brings so much more to the table than Jost. I’d like to see Maltsev and Kaut get a long look with NAK as the 4th line. I’m

I could see that. Jost probably is gone at the TDL as big name trade bait as the roster player throw in (Giroux etc)
Maltsev NAK Kaut would be an interested 4th line to try next season.

I like the Järnkrok target at the deadline here....but if they could swap out Helm for him....now we are cooking

Copp is a clear upgrade so I'd do it, even if he can't be re-signed.

What pick would you add in that trade? 2nd? 3rd?

With Jost having another year of team control, I'd say a 3rd.
