the 1st is more valuable. Keep Frost in the deal.

Flyers say no, not giving up Frost and a first. Flyers probably would do Frost and Risto for this but not the other picks

I’d say this would be more of an offseason deal. There’s no urgency for Montreal to move Petry, nor for Philly to acquire him, they’re not going to the playoffs this year. Let him continue this run of good play under St. Louis and boost his value, and Montreal doesn’t really have anybody who can fill these defence spots if they were to trade him on top of Chiarot and Kulak. Also lets Philly keep whatever return they can get for risto. And lets remember here, fletcher traded the 14th overall pick and a second round pick for one year of a defencemen who has been terrible his entire career. A first plus frost for a player with term who has a history of being a high end top four d-man on an affordable contract (ristolainen is asking for 6.5+)

The bigger question is whether Petry is gonna be worth 5m for three full years? Flyers probably feel they can keep those young assets and spend 5m on UFA next season instead of obtaining Petry.

Habs likely can't flip Ristolainen if they are also retaining on Petry. Nor will they be likely to retain on Petry.
This would indeed be an off season trade, after Petry has shown the first half of this season was an anomaly.

Montreal would prefer taking Frost, Ristolainen, and retention out of the deal. It's still possible with Frost in place of the 1st. (We are assuming lottery protection if the 1st is involved.)
Either option is worthy of consideration.

The RHD market isn't promising. Letang likely isn't going to Philly. Klingberg will cost more in money and term. The rest will be cheaper but most are less effective players in general.
If I could go back and trade Poehling and a 3rd for a top 4 RHD instead of signing Savard, I wouldn't even hesitate.

Even with retention his contract is still costly and the Flyers should not be trading picks and prospect at the stage they are in

Flyers getting absolutely ripped here. Frost and Risto maybe, but even then I'd be hesitant
