LHD options - what are they worth

Created by: Mystaes
Team: 2021-22 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 2, 2022
Published: Mar. 2, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Detroit needs a top4 lhd for 2-3 years to support the right side while a large lhd prospect pool develops. Looking for guys with some (but short) term and who may not fit their clubs anymore.

The idea is to avoid having to go longterm on a defensemen in UFA
Trades
1.
DET
  1. Martinez, Alec
Additional Details:
35 next season. 2 years left, and Vegas is in cap hell.
VGK
2.
DET
  1. Muzzin, Jake
Additional Details:
Older with 2 years on a team that is really struggling against the cap. Recently is rather injury prone when it counts.
TOR
3.
DET
  1. Sanheim, Travis
Additional Details:
Slightly overplayed but serviceable top 4 LHD. Not a ton of term left.
PHI
4.
DET
  1. Provorov, Ivan
Additional Details:
A little more interesting due to his contract - he’s failed to live up to it and is about 2-3m overpayed. Not a 1D as hoped, but serviceable top 4. Don’t have a pulse on whether he or sandheim would be more likely to be moved by Philly in their “retool”.
PHI
5.
DET
STL
  1. 2022 7th round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Any other top4 lhd that might meet these requirements?

He’s a rental and needs a new contract. This is not for a playoff push. But finding someone with short term to be a plug and insulate rookies a little.

I would think Sanheim would be the target here for DET, Martinez to old ( I get it’s a plug to bridge gap to younger D) and Muzzin is to injury prone (33 and 2 concussions this season at over 5m cap mehhh)

Prov doesn’t get moved I don’t believe as he has term and age to be effective part of PHI plan

Reilly from BOS could be option for you as well, As this can wait till the off-season, think he has 2 years left at 3m (after this year) and BOS is going to need to move a LHD to make roster space for younger players, I would think DET 3rd gets him out of BOS in offseason

Sanheim -> probably a late 1st, maybe a 2nd and a prospect depending on the prospect

Provorov -> Zadina+

The only one I'd even consider is Martinez. The rest would either be poor fits, or cost too much...

I'd like sanheim but cost. I think its gonna be martinez, he makes sense. Add to it edvinsson and a ufa like Cole or maata and hope for the best.

I think Martinez is best bet as well. Reilly maybe in Boston but he's not that great. We need someone to play some top 4 minutes.

muzzin would probably fetch a high second and a third if its from a team thats near the middle of the pack/ bottom or a late first rounder like 26-32

Scandella wouldn’t be bad pick up for the wings in the off-season

What about:

Nicolas Hague from Vegas (he might be too expensive for Vegas to re-sign in the offseason)
Gustav Forsling from Florida (if Florida gets a top line LHD like Chychrun from AZ then he may be expendable)
Ryan Graves from Jersey (wish we would have traded for him instead of Leddy last year as they went for similar costs)

Matheson or Pettersson from Pittsburgh, They will move one of them this summer.

Erik Gustafsson will be UFA and is cheap and good enough to run our 2nd PP and has numbers that are not much worse than Hronek's.

Jacob Moverare will be available on waivers or could be traded for, he's ready to hold down a 3rd pair spot and is super solid and can grow with the team.

I think you should give the Jets a call for Dillon. Sounds like exactly what you want.

We have a logjam with prospects already so I think the team looks to move 2 of Dillon, Stanley, Heinola or Samberg. Dillon still fits our team, but with JMo, Dillon, Stanley, Heinola, Samberg, Chisholm and Schmidt that can play the left side we could move Dillon for 2 - 2nds or a 2nd plus a RHD prospect (I'm thinking Tuomisto)
