I think you miss understood Friedman, other teams will actually give the Habs something for his contract. Not the Habs paying someone else to take it

This doesn’t actually do anything for the Leafs.

This is not how LTIR works in reference to cap space.

Could you explain how this situation differs from them putting Muzzin on LTIR and how teams like TB and Toronto would trade for Clarkson and Seabrook. Does the leafs acquiring Weber work differently than that?

It all very complex. But yes the Clarkson deal is different. At the time the Leafs didnt have Marner signed. This is a very simple version. The way LTIR works is if a team has a cap on the day of 80mill and a player making 1mill is injured they would get 1 million in cap relief however if a team has 79 mill cap hit on that same day and a 1million dollar player gets hurt they receive no cap relief. This is why the Leafs dont receive Muzzins full salary relief. They did however make a few paper moves to get as close to the cap as possible before placing Muzzin on LTIR in order to gain as much relief as possible. In order to get cap relief a team needs to be cap compliant.

Yes. His point was that Weber gives a $7.8M cap hit for a few years, for only $6M in total cash.
So Arizona saves millions of dollars if they give Montreal a pick for his contract.
Philadelphia saves millions of dollars if they trade Hayes for Weber.
Sending Weber and Armia to a team negates the dollars spent on Armia and still saves millions.
(Examples, doesn't have to be those teams/players.)

Just to add about Seabrook. Hawks had lots potential bonuses to pay in 21/22 (Tampa had none). So if the Hawks might have had have bonus carrying over into 22/23 decreasing their 22/23 useable cap.
So the Hawks thought it more cap efficient to trade for 5m Tyler Johnson.
Tampa's was happy to get rid of Johnson's 5m cap and third rounder in exchange for Seabrook's 6.875 LTIR....which didn't affect Tampa's cap. Now if Seabrook ever is cleared medically and wants to play again, then Tampa has a Seabrook's cap issue.
