There are always players on LTIR, no reason for Arizona for "pay in a trade" for Weber. Most of LTIR is insured anyway.

The point is that it saves Arizona money while they try to hit the cap floor next season. Wouldn't surprise me if they gave up an asset for that contract, but definitely not Chychrun.

Tampa would just be nice and give them Seabrook. Having a player on LTIR "hurts" a team teams cap if that team has a lot of bonuses to be paid, and they are near the cap.
There are lots of UFAs trying to find a home next season in a cap strapped league. No reason that Arizona won't have trouble hitting the cap floor, other you point is valid, do they want to spend real money to hit the cap floor.

Weber's money isn't a positive asset. Montreal are talking to teams about paying to take it on.

A lot of dead cap.

Point is, that’s not getting chychrun, and its nowhere close.

No reason for Montreal to unload him. Especially at the cost of assets.
Playing in a 5000 seat arena is going to hurt the pocketbook. Keeping the cap hit low and the dollars spent even lower, is definitely a positive through that transition period.

Soooo someone’s going to pay to get a player that isn’t playing? Yeesh. Tell me you’re a homer without telling me you’re a homer.

I have the Habs possibly trading the 4th overall pick plus $25mm in that proposal. Hardly the Coyotes « giving up » Chychrun.

Because he’s making 3M 1M 1M 1M
And I’m not talking about receiving high mid round pick, could be an AHLer or late pick, even Future Considerations. If it helps Arizona, then sure we can ship him there

Sooo a team is going to pay $6M for someone who isn’t going to play hockey, and pay for the right to do so.

Gee, Habs fans are getting sillier and sillier. First overvaluing their poor long term cap hits and expecting good picks in return. Now expecting assets for LTIRs. No, I understand you completely.

Yes, Arizona benefits from trading for Weber's contract because of the salary to cap difference. Yes they'll have to pay to get it from MTL.

No, it won't cost them a ton of assets to get. Maybe a 4th or 5th round pick or something like that. That's a very small price to pay for something benefits Arizona's cash situation immensely and MTL gets a small asset for essentially doing nothing. This is called a win/win scenario.

And just so its clear because some don't understand the "why", Arizona doesn't want to have to pay 61M each year to reach the cap floor because they are cash poor right now and rebuilding anyway but they still have to reach that cap floor anyway because that's the rule in the NHL. They could just spend actual dollars on UFA's but then they'll be actually spending 8M on a 8M dollar players which they don't want to have to do because they are cash poor and trying to be bad. (Rebuilding)

So by adding a player like Weber whose not going to play but just be on the sidelines, they can effectively increase their cap by 7.8M for the following 4 years but only pay like 1.5M on average for it. This will mean that Arizona can effectively reach the 61M cap floor while only actually spending like 55M in actual dollars.

There is also the potential LTIR benefit for a team like with what TB did last year acquiring Brent Seabrook simply to do the "Kucherov playoff" thing but I feel the Arizona scenario makes more sense.

Arizona could easily reach the cap floor and MTL wouldn't trade what could be the first overall pick. For Chychurn they could easily get prospects who can play in return.
