Chabot is 25 and has 6 years left @ $8M AAV; Nurse is 27 and next year starts an 8 year deal @ $9.25M. I think there's an argument to be made as to whose the better player on the ice, but both of them are heavy-minute #1 defensemen. When it's that close on the ice, you gotta look at the off ice stuff to figure out the value - and Edmonton is getting the younger player with the lower cap hit and less term.
So Edmonton is getting better value at the top of the trade, does the rest of what they offer add up? Well, they're giving away a cap dump (Kyle Turris has spent half the season buried in the AHL so please don't try and argue otherwise), throwing in a guy that can't play in Canada and is coming off myocarditis in Archibald, and throwing in a 1st two years in the future. Ottawa, meanwhile, is throwing in Anton Forsberg as well? It's gotta be a hard pass for the Sens - they're giving up 2 of the best 3 players in the trade, getting a pick that doesn't help them til 2024 at earliest, and doing Edmonton a favor - the rest of these deals might not work if they don't offload Turris' contract. Edmonton adds, and adds something nice, to make this happen.
