beating a dead horse (but it's still fun)

Expansion Protected List:

Zetterberg
Nielsen
Tatar
Nyquist
Mantha
Athanasiou
Sheahan

Green
Jensen
Ouellet

Mrazek

This forces LV to either take expensive Abdelkader or one of the young D that (in my opinion) within the next year or two will be surpassed by the next wave of D prospects (Hicketts, Saarijarvi, Hronek, Cholowski)...aka not part of the long term solution. I think Sproul could be a decent NHLer and it's unfortunate that he got injured, but because of that injury he's the odd man out. LV could also take Russo for cheap but I think Sproul provides more upside with that cannon of a shot.

CGY trade:

Ok so I know moving Howard is somewhat of a long shot but I think DET and CGY can get a win-win deal done here. Retaining salary makes Howard only 4.5 mil cap hit. Assuming CGY doesn't move or bring in any other pieces that leaves them with almost 17.5 mil in cap to sign their RFAs and anyone else they want to. I think Howard is a good bridge to whoever their goalie of the future is...not to mention he'd be a great mentor. Someone has to miss out on the more attractive options (Darling, Grubauer, Bishop). If CGY is outbid I think this still gives them a good option to remain competitive until a long term solution is found.

With that all done you start the year with some combination of:

Tatar - Zetterberg - Nyquist
Athanasiou - Nielsen - Mantha
Svechnikov - Larkin - Abdelkader
Sheahan - Helm - Glendening
Burtuzzi
Nosek

Green - Jensen
DeKeyser - Ouellet
Ericsson - Russo
Kronwall

Mrazek
Coreau

Trade deadline pieces are Green, Sheahan, Russo, Nosek, Buruzzi, and maybe Nyquist. I think for sure Green and Sheahan get moved but everyone else is a "maybe".

Once we move some guys, call ups I would like to see are HIcketts/Renouf and Holmstrom/Lorito...maybe even Smith or Hronek/Saarijarivi for a couple games.

I doubt PIT would want Green, With Letang and Maata under contract and Dumoulin and Schultz about to get raises they probably wont want to take on other D men above 2 mil

Sheahan makes slightly over $2 million zero chance that Holland retains $750,000 on him to move his cheap contract.

ANA passes... Howard trade is extremely wishful thinking too. He may be worth a 5th at most.

Even if Holland retained half on Howard i seriously doubt he nets us a 2nd+4th round pick. If we can get a 5th rounder for him we take it and run.

You're right. My mistake. Edited now to protect him instead of Helm

You don't think they'd want him at the deadline? He'd probably be the best Dman on the rental market...Unless they're trading for him before the season his cap hit will be prorated

I think if Darling and Grubauer are gone Howard may be the best option on the market. Bishop will wait until after the draft to sign. MAF will be far more expensive. Miller is nothing more than a backup now. The market may dictate less than 2nd and 4th but I think he's more valuable than a 5th

Why not? Retain money at the deadline to increase the number of teams that can afford the remainder of his cap hit.

I like what you've done in your trades. Can't stand all the people that criticize these profiles. We all want our team to be better and these dreams we all post are hopes for an improved product on the ice next season. Let's hope KH and mgmt make more moves than they normally would and that we rebuild as quickly as possible!

It's a matter of affordability

7 mill in for Letang, just over 4 mill for Maatta, Schultz and Dumo are likely going to be about 4 Mill a piece... even with 3 mill retained that is a LOT of money being spent on a guy that likely would have to play bottom pairing minutes, and the pens do not want to give up a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd anymore. Rentals don't work. We do better drafting our own young players who we can pay on ELC's

Sheehan. Why would the Ducks or any team want him even with 50% retention? Ducks want NHLers.
