What if they took half a step back

Created by: BeterChiarelli
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 9, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If winning is going to be out of the question this season, should they find more assets to make moving out multiple firsts and prospects in order to fully fix the roster for next season?

Blowing the team up entirely probably isn't an option so a few smaller moves were made to try and keep this team in the picture for a wildcard berth. Paltry that we're in this situation but there's only one way forward.

As possible as missing the playoffs are right now for the Oliers, got to think it would be a hard sell to McDavid to punt on this season instead of pushing the chips all in. Even if it could be the right play

Based on the report of the Devils looking to terminate Subban's contract so he can sign with the Leafs?

Nah. Koskinen's audition as your backup for next year will be prize enough.

McDavid looks like he's playing hurt. I think it would be a tough sell but with how this season has gone and how banged up the team is, he may understand.

PK Subban is a negative value asset as you showed in your trade of Koskinen for him. Leafs, or anyone else, have no interest in him. Leafs specifically have 8 NHL defensemen currently on their team who are better options.

Kane should return a 1st. He's playing well and he's cheap - Tampa would give up their 1st for sure.

Rangers might give up to a 2nd for Koskinen at 50% too.

Barrie has more value than that, but if moved, it's probably a summertime deal. There will be more buyers then with more cap space.

Why are they trying to sign him should the Devils terminate his contract then?

It would have been nice at the time to sign Kane. But now that I look at it we are good. Sure he bring the powerfoward role that can score and that’s rare. But the penalties aren’t great. I wouldn’t like to give up that package. I would give that up for yams and a solid defensemen that’s young

Question.

How is Keith. How has he been playing.

I was more interested in Iorio than a 1st but I agree that he should easily fetch a first.

Better than expected but I'm still hoping he retires at the end of the year.

Freidman suggested the Devils could do that but it doesn't make sense from the Devils to terminate his contract and lose him for nothing

Consider what you just said. For PK Subban to be moved to a new team, his current deal has to be terminated. Why would a team ever give you a pick for a player at a higher cap hit than they'd sign him at for free? Your thinking makes no sense.

There's also no report that the Devils are going to terminate his contract or that the Leafs are trying to sign him. You misread something.

The hate Subban is getting is ridiculous
He's not worth 9M or 4.5M, but he has good value at 2.25M

How does yam and 3rd for iorio sound. Or for Kane. Iorio and 2 seconds for yams and kane

You are dreaming as bad as the OP is. The fact is the Leafs have 8 defensemen currently on their roster who are all better than Subban.

Why would Edmonton add a pick to a proven NHL asset for an unproven prospect?

I'd sooner take up CD282's idea of shopping Kane to Tampa Bay for another 1st before overpaying the Capitals for a prospect. If there's a Yamamoto-to-Washington deal to be made, I'd even further prefer to add more on Edmonton's end and get a return of Iorio plus Samsonov.

Because he's an offensive defenseman who doesn't generate much offense and gives up everything defensively. Nick Leddy is a better option than PK Subban for teams and Nick Leddy isn't a good option for anyone either even though he costs a fraction of PK Subban.

I’m fine with that. Sammy needs a fresh start. Personally I’m not sure what iorios value is. So that’s a question mark for me. But I could see a sammy and a iorio deal to Edmonton

He's on pace for around 30 points while playing bottom pair minutes and no powerplay time
He's a good 3rd pair dman and has shown he can play well with a defensive dman

PK Subban is averaging 17:46 a game and is New Jersey's 4th most used PP defenseman at close to 40 minutes so far this season. Why even bother if you are going to misrepresent such easily checked things?

And that's 5th on the Devils behind Severson, Hamilton, Graves, Siegenthaler, and Graves which means he's playing bottom pair...

Lets see. He started this season at 20:58 played (3rd on the Devils and 1:34 of which is on the PP). 10 games into the season he played 22:28 (3rd on the team and 4:10 on the PP). I can keep going if you want or you can just get your head out of your ass and realize you can't say a guy has been playing 3rd minutes all season when he started both as a PP quarterback and higher pairing defenseman. You purposefully misrepresented PK Subban's season to try and talk him up and that's how bad he is. He's not putting up 30 points from the 3rd pair like you tried to say and the game logs show as much.

Furthermore, teams average 3 power plays per night and if you assume a maximum shift length of one minute, then the following is true:

The Devils should be expected to have had 171 opportunities on the power play.
171 power plays is 342 minutes.
PK Subban has been on the ice for 11.695% of all of the New Jersey power plays this season.

Nothing's been misrepresented. You just have absolutely no understanding of the player headed to Toronto in this case, I'm assuming due to some underlying nonsensical bias.

Subban is absolutely an upgrade on Holl and the one-half of Jake Muzzin that isn't hurt.
