Severson Trade Targets

Created by: HeadHighSauce
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 9, 2022
Published: Mar. 9, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
These are all more starting points to a conversation, imo

"“No, I mean, Damon has a lot of value to us, he’s a very good player,” said Fitzgerald. “Right-shot defencemen don’t grow on trees. I don’t know what he’s going to want (on his next contract). We have his services for another year at least.
“I can tell you, moving Damon Severson, it would have to be a really good package that helps us now and in the future,” added Fitzgerald. “But I haven’t talked to anybody about him.’’"

I'd prefer to move him because I don't think he's going to be playing at a level commensurate with his salary on an extension that starts in his age 29 season but he is an excellent top four defenseman who could provide A LOT of value to contenders for the next two years

if thats the ask, avs would be out, too much IMO for what would be a guy sloting into their number 4 spot, potentially 5th based on health

I think leafs pass on that specific offer. Can't see them giving up liljegren and a 1st. one or the other with a mid/lower end tier prospect like steeves or abramov. But personally I would not trade liljegren in a deal for severson.

      Who is he worse than?
      A top four of
      Toews-Makar
      Girard-Severson
      would look pretty good
Based on the way the Avs defense played last night, they could use another dman

1 game, 2nd of a back to back, 4th game of a road trip isnt going to give you proper scouting on the avs D core.

If Byram is healthy, he is number 3 and its argument of Girard and Severson as who is 4th anygiven night.

Didn't realize Byram was that good. Any timeline on his return?

Fwiw I absolutely don't think last night was overly indicative of the state of the Avs defense. Though I think the Devils are better than most give them credit for.

But Byram /isnt/ healthy and there's no indications that he might be. And even so, Damon Severson absolutely crushing soft minutes on the third pair is like, literally one of the items on Dom's Cup Winner checklist. That seems worth it, to me, for a legit contender.

hes skating for a few weeks already back in denver. No timeline but its all good signs hes out there skating with no issues.

Byram is very impressive, thats why avs fans get so heated when other teams just toss him into trades for rental pieces etc. The kid has franchise top pairing potential, when healthy hes a game changer.

i credit the devils, they ran them into the ground. Avs had no answers and looked like a beat team.
There is no indications that byram isnt not healthy either, hes skating, he doesnt owe anyone updates on his timeline. He is doing what he needs to do, we cant just be doom and gloom all the time

its nothign about the player, i like Severson alot, a 1st and a top d prospect from the avs just is too much. They can find someone cheaper for that role....like Manson as an example, that wont cost them nearly that

I mean sure but he's A.) Not nearly as good B.) a pure rental whereas you get Severson for 2M and 2 cup runs

D defense isnt as a need, assets need to be prioritized elsewher first, a 1st and Helleson is paying too much for what they need, those assets can go somewher else first and then circle back on a dman.

Not everyone team selling is getting a 1st rounder, any given year there is roughly only 3 1st traded at the deadline. I just think selling teams need to temper the 1st in return expectation thats all

I don't think the Canes will move Morrow unless it's for a long term asset. Like 4+ years of control

Early this season, Byram looked better than Makar/Toews/Girard some nights. Obviously a very small sample size and Makar/Toews both had a slow start with injuries and stuff, but Byram’s upside is absolutely massive if he can stay healthy. A big “if”, but the reason why he’s untouchable in trades.

Devils GM said Severson will be with Devils for "at least" two years, so I don't think he is available.

COL - Helleson deal would probably be the closest here.
CAR - Morrow is a defensive liability, but the counting stats are pretty.
VGK - Devils aren't adding cap dumps...one thing Fitzgerald has avoided.

Im super high on LIljegren, so I'd vote against that trade. I would be open to doing something like 1st + Abbruesse + Dermott with no retention from the Devils end. Or even a Niemela one for one for Severson

Correct, the quote is in the description. I think all these offers meet the criteria Tom laid out

Morrow - yes he's poor defensively but you can literally just say this exact sentence about Luke Hughes. He's got time. (however this is the one deal that doesn't help us immediately as per tom's criteria)
Dadonov - isn't a pure cap dump at all. He's a useful NHL player which "helps us now" where Hague helps us "in the future"

I think he will be good. But not there yet.
And in the small chance that there would be a Severson to Colorado trade, it may be Byram as the return.

Yeah man, I didn't say you were wrong. I just said both are defensively poor (true) and have great counting totals (true). And with the issue (battles) he'll probably learn to use his size better with more time as he's coming right from high school lol

Abruzzese hasn't signed and there has been some talk he goes to UFA this summer (I imagine NJ would be interested then as he grew up playing here)
Niemela needs to prove up in NA pro hockey first.

I guess my other suggestion would be 1st + Robertson + Duszak + Mrazek for Bernier + Severson, Idk if that moves the needle for you guys tho

Yeah man, I didn't say you were wrong. I just said both are defensively poor (true) and have great counting totals (true). And with the issue (battles) he'll probably learn to use his size better with more time as he's coming right from high school lol

I am not challenging...I just though those were interesting charts.
      Morrow will be good.
But I just don't think we trade Severson.

I guess my other suggestion would be 1st + Robertson + Duszak + Mrazek for Bernier + Severson, Idk if that moves the needle for you guys tho

Fitzgerald has said he would not trade Severson before deadline unless they are floored with an offer.
Dubas has said he won't make goalie change mid-season.

Oh my bad. Yes very interesting. Makes me want Morrow more, as winning battles at his size is something you can teach for sure.

I also don't think we do. I'd like to, though. and before the TDL when you can maximize his return.

Yeah I guess there lays the problem, I wouldn't trade Severson if I were you guys anyhow. Seems like Dougie Hamilton 2.0, big mobile play drivers who shoot right, I can for sure see a world where you guys finish high in the division next year if you get some saves
