Hagel my bagel

Created by: leafsFan1996
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 10, 2022
Published: Mar. 10, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
UFAs:
Paul - big, good defensive metrics, from Toronto, can play center.
Blackwell - produces and isn't a liability defensively, could likely move up the lineup. This is the least likely signing imo since it would be a no brainer for Seattle to re-sign him and his lack of games should lower his cost.
Smith - cheap D depth, from Toronto
Wedgewood - likely Cheaper than Mrazek, from Toronto Area, putting up a.907 in zona, hopefully can be a fine 1b.
*picked a lot of Toronto are Ufas since there is a track record of them signing here and in some cases taking taking team friendly deals (Spezza, Bunts)

Line 1: if it ain't broke don't fix it

line 2: I don't like JT and Willy together. I find JT is better with grinders, WIlly seems to play too fast and is more of a rush player. Hagel and Kase should work well with JT. if not just swap Kase and Willy.

Line 3: have Wily and Nicky Bobby take on easier competition and light up the lamp. Paul can be a good defensive presence and can be a good forechecker

Line 4: this line can take tough matchups and not score much. I tried to replicate the current Engvall-Kampf-Soup line. I would have re-signed Soup but I doubt he'll come back. Simmer

Pair 1: shutdown pair, assuming Muzzin comes back from injury and can be a capably 2nd pair guy. Brodie will drive the pair while Muzzin is still tough in corners and in front

Pair 2: Russian Bear could be swapped with Lily depending on whos best. Reilly drives offense, Bear is stead

pair 3: they've put up good numbers this year in a 3rd pair role and hopefully can only get better

extras:
Simmonds can sub in when needed, if this team stilll employs Kase there will be injury replacements needed. he's a good 13th forward, but not an everyday player anymore imo. Maybe he'll shine with Engvall and Kampf in a forechecking role.

Smith can play both side and is tough. He costs 750k. If he's washed maybe Rubins is a solid enough 7D, if not depth defensemen can be got at the TDL on the cheap

Goalies: idk man lets hope they are not terrible

Strange if Wedgewood is a good as Mrzarek, why does Wedgewood sign for the Leafs for 1.85m and some team trades for 3.8m Mrzarek.

Since 2016, Mrazek has been above league average in exactly 2 out of 6 seasons, over a total of a 52 game sample size in those 2 seasons. Dubas gambled on Mrazek looking like he did for 12 games last season in Carolina, and it just ain't it. For better or worse, you're probably stuck with him, especially given that sizable increase in dollars owed over the next two seasons. Probably could have got away with it if he didn't backload the deal, because now, you're trying to dump a $8+ mil in cash worth of a below league average goalie who hasn't been able to stay healthy. Can't imagine there'd be a lineup.

Hirvonen is a kicker not a main prospect piece. Knies or no deal.

where did I say that? He's cheaper, and is hopefully a fine 1b.

Why would someone trade for Mrazek:
      1) Mrazek has a fine track record, teams could view Mrazek as a better goalie
      2) teams need to hit the floor
      3) I said they may need to add a pick, rebuilding teams could be interested
      4) there are dumb GM's. Risto just signed a 5x5.1 deal. Maybe a guy like Holland would like to bring in Mrazek

Knies a 1st and a 4th is an overpay for sure.

Then shouldn't the Leafs go with the better goalies Mrzarek? I don't understand the love for the current edition Campbell. Why is he resigned?

Kerfoot is a cap dump, not a C. Ryan Hartman is better C than him.

I said it on another post. Hawks don’t need another 5’9 dude in the team.

agree with half of this, disagree with half - Kerfoot is better on the wing than taking faceoffs, but he's not a cap dump. $3.5M is a totally reasonable price to pay for a winger who's been a 0.5PPG player for his entire career (and is outpacing that with 39 points in 57 games this year).

Hagel doesnt seem like a fit, Chicago wants a haul and the leafs would rather bargain bin shop
