Price of Sanheim to Colorado

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2021-22 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 10, 2022
Published: Mar. 10, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What would be a reasonable price for Sanheim? He'd be a good stylistic fit in Colorado given that he's a good skater who likes to join the rush and that he defends the blue-line aggressively.

Girard already does that though and they have him locked in for far longer than Sanheim.

It doesn't make sense for the Avs to trade Girard for a piece elsewhere on their roster to only pay to acquire essentially the same player. They're better off just keeping Girard and using the pieces they'd have sent for Sanheim to acquire whatever they would be leveraging Girard for, no?

With the D they have I think they would look for bottom pair more physical D with good net front presence and good on PK. They have Jack Johnson, EJ, Murray and McDermid so it's pretty crowded when everyone healthy they would have to dump one somewhere

I don't really see the point of spending a great return for a player that would end up playing for a bottom-4 role for them for 1,5 years at most.

    Thanks for the feedback idea.

I disagree that Avs wouldn't be looking at him. His analytics are fantastic; he's great in transition; and his size would give the Avs something they lack (even though he's not great in front of the net). Sanheim and Girard can both play on the right as well.

    Toews ---- Makar
    Sanheim - Girard
    Byram/JJ -- EJ
    Murray

As for the idea you had, I'm not sure Philadelphia would want a LHD prospect given that they're probably looking at moving one of Provorov or Sanheim to make room for York and Zemula. Behrens might be a bit too similar to York, though he is looking good at DU with Bobby Brink so there's that...

I'm not so sure it would take a huge return to get him. Fletcher isn't very smart, as the Ristolainen signing clearly shows (as if more proof was needed).

Also, two playoff runs would be better than paying for a one year rental.

Yeah that would be my main concern with a move like this. Whilst it certainly plays to the Avs strengths it doesn't really solve the biggest weaknesses that you touched on. It would however push JJ out of the top 4 and give the Avs another truly legit top 4 guy who can move the puck and play to their style.

Well I think the return would have to be close to similar to what he paid for Risto. Would make sense considering he's basically replacing Sanheim with the guy.

If Byram is going to be healthy for playoffs I'm not concerned with top 4 but they will need Physical D and PK help on that bottom Pair. If Byram is still going to be out or Girard injury is more than day to day then top 4 will need to be addressed forsure. I think only Joe Sakic knows Byram status right now

His analytics are much better than he is. To suggest he is anything more than a good offensive, second line powerplay, no more than 20:30 a game defenseman is insane. In my eyes, he is worth no more than a guy like Olausson and a 3rd but teams would give up much more than that. He is more or less a liability in his own end when it comes to turnovers. This has been his best season, but he still needs a lot of rounding out of his game to do, and I dont know if that is accomplishable. Acquire at your own risk

Literally the exact same things were said about Devon Toews when the Avs first acquired him. He was just an offensive Dman for NYI who struggled in his own zone defensively. And yet here he is on the Avs 18 months later getting his name dropped into the Norris conversation from time to time.

The way the Avs defend is different from most teams given that the Avs D system isn't designed towards having a bunch of hulking towers clearing the crease; rather, it's designed to defend much more actively by compressing the DZ blueline with active sticks from the Dmen stepping up and forwards backchecking in unison, and that's a style that fits Sanheim perfectly. The system in Colorado is why guys like Ian Cole and Nemeth can look completely out of their depth as replacement level Dmen on the Avs, but then they go elsewhere and look good again (moreso Cole in Carolina than Nemeth).
