If John Tavares doesn't re-sign, who is the Free Agent replacement?

If the Islanders lose John Tavares for nothing, what UFA do they sign to replace him?

If John Tavares doesn't re-sign, there's obviously no replacing him, as there are no other free agent forwards as good as Tavares next offseason, but obviously the Islanders would sign someone like Mikael Backlund. But the thing is, who is that forward that they sign?

Johan Sundström was just released from his contract with Frölunda, in the SHL. He's 24, and I think the Islanders still have his rights (don't know if he got a qualifying offer on his last contract). His stats with Frölunda:

2015 - 16: 17 G, 36 P in 51 GP, 4th on the team in points (3 G, 9 P in 16 GP in the playoffs; Frölunda won the SHL championship, and Sundström won the Stefan Liv Memorial Trophy for playoffs MVP)

2016 - 17: 12 G, 38 P in 45 GP, 2nd on the team in points (1 G, 1 P in 9 GP in the playoffs; Frölunda eliminated in the semifinals)

How is this anything to do with my question?

This is the question you are asking, is it not? If Sundström (who plays C, by the way) was just released from his contract and is thus a free agent whose NHL rights are owned by the Islanders, that makes him an option to be signed by the Islanders.

You've already stipulated that there are very few, if any, free agents floating around that could replace Tavares in his entirety. And, you're right, there aren't. Backlund, Little, Atkinson, none of them are going to be at the level that Tavares is at. But Sundström has had success in his 2 years in the SHL; if you adjust his regular-season point totals and assume that translates 100% to the NHL, you're looking at a 20-goal, 50-point player, which Mikael Backlund is. If Sundström can be as good as Backlund, *and* the Islanders have his rights, it'd be easier to acquire his services.

This post-season, yes. But he had 9 P in 16 GP last post-season and won the SHL's Conn Smythe trophy, so he's got to be an alright player, at least. (And Frölunda, as a whole, wasn't doing very well this season; they kinda pulled a Minnesota, played poorly down the stretch, and dropped from the 1st to the 3rd seed, and then they nearly lost their first post-season series after being down 3-1 and had to win their last 2 games in OT. They let a bunch of their decent-to-good players go a couple of days ago, including Sundström and Henrik Tömmernes, who's been one of the better defenders in the SHL over the last 2 years.)

Really, I brought Sundström up as an interesting outside-the-box idea. I understand that your original intent was "which NHL free agents should the Islanders sign," but looking at the European leagues is sometimes worthwhile. Sundström was a 2011 2nd round pick (50th overall), and he's only 24, and his rights are likely still owned by the Islanders. Considering he's been one of the better players in the SHL (19th in point-scoring in '15-'16, 11th in '16-'17), *and* he's still an RFA that the Islanders can justify giving less money to than a Mikael Backlund, *and* they can get him now instead of having to wait for 2018 free agency, he's worth consideration.
