Playoffs in 2023

Created by: elchud
Team: 2021-22 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 13, 2022
Published: Mar. 13, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
First 6 trades are 2022 deadline trades to add picks. Janmark is a salary cap dump on expiring deal. Brossoit is getting paid too much (this year and next year) and Buffalo can buy him out in the offseason. Moore/Wagner are buried players that are off Boston's books next season and don't have any negative salary impact on the Sabres next season.

Last three trades are post-season. Bryson will be cheap on an RFA deal and there's not a spot for him in Buffalo (same for Artuu). Minnesota adds a quality young D while giving up McBain who won't help them for the next two seasons. Minny is win now,

Florida adds a high 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft, moves out quantity, and clears salary as they are in a big cap crunch next season. Sabres add Power's D partner and buys out Hornqvist.

Chicago clears out long term contracts and puts themselves in a position to sign free agents or go full rebuild by adding other cap dump contracts that can be attached to 1sts. Sabres add veteran depth and Dahlin's D partner. Connolly is bought out.

Buffalo signs Husso and Johan Larsson as UFA and resigns Olofsson to a 4year deal and retains all of their RFAs.

Krebs Thompson Tuch
Skinner Mittelstadt Quinn
Asplund Cozens Olofsson
Girgensons Larsson Okposo
Tyler Johnson

Dahlin Murphy
Power Gudas
Samuelsson Jokiharju
Jake McCabe

Husso
UPL
Houser or Dell

All added salary does not impact the Sabres negatively. Jake McCabe bought out in 2024 after two more seasons, buy out the final season of his 4 year deal, and along with a possible/probable buy out of Skinner to maximize for massive Dahlin re-signing.

Bryson is arguably not a spare defenseman either. Need 7 top-6 defensemen on a playoff roster, if not 8 or 9.

Added salaries/contracts fit the Sabres short-term and long-term vision.

Sabres needed defense experience, grit, and right-hand partners for Dahlin/Power.

Tyler Johnson is a playoff veteran, big contract for two more seasons but it doesn't matter. Could use an experienced forward that isn't named Cody Eakin.

Gotta believe that Middlestadt line gets absolutely run over in their own end. Would need like a 90% ozone starts to be able to even consider that as a line

Quinn isn't getting run over, and yes, Skinner/Mitts is a high o-zone pairing.

Not in the ahl, but as a 21 year old in the nhl with two linemates that are defensive liabilities I think that is rough way to introduce him to the league and I do think that line gets completely run over in their own end

Fair points I guess but Skinner and Mitts are both 200 pounds, Skinner's D game is opportunistic and can be pesty when he wants it to be, and Mitts D game is improving. Disagree they get run over and adding muscle in the backend (Murphy/Gudas/McCabe/a developing Samuelsson) is partly because we are light on the forwards. Tuch addressed this is in his most recent post-game, and the Sabres are playing a system that takes this into account.

Just trying to make the playoffs next year, things will continue to evolve.

I'm fine with better lines, just think you're exaggerating.

I think mittelstadts play in his own end will eventually force him from center to wing. It's unclear if Skinner even knows where his end is. Our other centers are young and have room to grow, but none are particularly good in their own end.

With Ville Husso at .920 save percentage, I do think the roster can and will overtake one of PIT/BOS/WAS, all three franchises are aging and on the descent.

If the Sabres don't have minimum .915 save percentage from all goalies, for the season, yes, the team has 0.0% chance of making the playoffs.

That’s a no from COL. COL needs to add dmen and doesn’t need to worry about cap space.

Separate note, BUF fans need to give up the goat thinking Mittlestadt is a top 6 forward especially on a playoff team.

It adds one million more cap for another trade. Pysyk is an improvement over Murray.

That’s your opinion. Who cares about $1M when the Avs may end up putting $12M on LTIR on Tuesday.

My bad wasn't tracking the severity of Landeskog.

Keep the 3rd

He should be back for the playoffs, but him and Girard are both out a minimum of a month which means there would be about 8 games left when they could return at the soonest. I mean why not use the extra cap space of LTIR. lol

Minnesota won't do both of these deals.
