From @NHL_Watcher on twitter:

"Friedman on 32TP:

Somebody told me they wouldn't be surprised if, and they've done deals before, if Colorado and Toronto were talking about something, I just have no idea what that could be."

Not saying a deal is for sure going to happen (its unlikely tbh, this is just a rumour and im bored) but if there was a trade in the works then this is my best guess in terms of which players could be involved

Both are contenders so if anything it would be a roster player for roster player swap. I doubt either team would move a roster player for futures unless they needed to clear cap for something else (COL doesnt really need to now that Landy and Girard are out and they could put them on LTIR if needed)

Here are some players who I think could be involved in a change of scenery type of deal:

Tyson Jost - Hasnt really lived up to his draft expectations in COL but hes still decent and was very good defensively last season (not as good this season). If moved COL would need to find another C elsewhere
Ryan Murray - Has kind of underperformed this season but has had good defensive numbers in the past. With Muzzin out maybe TOR banks on him returning to his old self from his CBJ days

Ilya Mikheyev - Not sure if hes available but Id be very interested in him. I think he would pair well with Newhook on the 3rd line
Travis Dermott - Hes been good in a limited role and could possibly use a change of scenery
Justin Holl - Seems like Leafs fans hate him but he used to be pretty decent, I wonder if he would play better in a different system

Thoughts?

Dermott, Holl, and Mikheyev are the 3 players I thought of too when I heard what Elliott said.

I would think that Toronto will want to open some capspace for a some significant deadline additions, so trimming some fat like those 3 contracts might be a necessary move. Sakic and Dubas have a good relationship and have traded with one another multiple times before (the Kadri/Barrie swap, and then the Rosen/Hutchinson trade) so I could definitely see Dubas asking Sakic for some help if he knows that Sakic is interested in one of those depth guys.

Toronto probably won't trade Mikheyev but they might do it if they can get a better forward in another trade. I agree that he'd be a nice fit on the Avs 3rd line and also on the PK. They also have more capspace to be able to re-sign him in the offseason than Toronto do.

Holl seems to be Toronto fans' favourite whipping boy but he's nonetheless a reasonably solid 4/5 Dman who can PK. Dermott's skating and caphit would probably be easier for Colorado to fit though. Maybe something around Kaut for Dermott could work.

Whatever the players involved I can be assured Sakic is going to rob us blind

I heard that today too. I was trying to think of something and this is in the neighborhood of what I thought, because I don’t know that COL and TOR are great TDL partners.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's something around Dermott for a pick, as a precursor to a bigger trade by the Leafs to bolster their D. I think they look at Gio+ from SEA.

The only blockbuster that would make sense is if Colorado is scared with Kuempers injury history or if Kuempers extension is too pricey and decide to flip Kuemper for Fluery and have it be a three team trade with Chicago.

To Toronto: Keumper

To Colorado: Fluery

To Chicago: 1st + 3rd

Its VERY galaxy brained but if Fluery wants to commit at a low number in Chicago it could make sense

Both Grubauer and Kuemper took half a season before they looked comfortable in Colorado's system, so I very much doubt that Sakic has any interest in moving Kuemper 2 months before the playoffs, especially for Fleury who has much worse stats this year.

That doesnt make sense for COL though. Kuemper has been significantly better than Fleury this season so thats a clear downgrade for them

I totally agree it makes zero sense, but of all the blockbuster moves it makes the most sense. Which is kinda the point I was trying to make I would expect a more low-key move

The only big move that could make sense is if Colorado are taking on a contract to open some capspace for Toronto to acquire a goalie. For example if Toronto get Varlamov then Sakic could help Dubas shed some cap by taking Dermott/Holl/Mikheyev off his hands.

I think this is something they heard before the Francouz extension, IMO that is what this was all about. If Frankie wasnt willing to extend at that 2x2, Avs would flip him
