this_is_fine.jpg It’s also clear no teams were willing to pay up for Hertl - as to why it’s definitely worth keeping him. But now the Sharks have to make some crazy moves to expedite a “rebuild” that they never actually started.

Tough term to swallow.

We got Eklund. Coe. Robins. Gush. Ozzy. Bords. We're gonna be fine wink

aside from Eklund none of those guys are elite prospect a.k.a the kind of prospects that are franchise changing. and also what are you gonna do when you need to resign those guys

This is a good deal if San Jose can somehow dump one of Burns, Karlsson, or Vlasic without retention. If they can't, there's no room to maneuver with this many high AAV contracts.

Not sure how this makes sense for the Sharks. I think they are trending downward and now instead of cashing out on Hertl, they sign him until he's 35. Forever stuck as a Mediocre team.

Burns 8X8 32
Couture 8X8 30
Hertl 8x8 28
Meier 8X8 26?
Eklund 8X8 24?

I see a trend

How are they going to rebuild? With their contracts that is literally impossible.

No, competing with those contracts is impossible. How is it impossible to rebuild with bad contracts? Thats the perfect time to rebuild cause you will have tons of extra cap space - SJS could tank for the next couple years (they pretty much are already but not intentionally), gain picks and prospects and then a lot of their big contracts will be expiring around the time when they are ready to compete again and need to sign their new stars to deals after their ELCs

What's the purpose in signing Hertl to an 8 year this early in the signing process, if you were going to lock him up for the full 8? Then offering the Modified NTC for the 5 years, plus the NMC for the entire life of contract without taking $$ off of contract in exchange for those cookies/icing/frosting, you name the metaphor? Mr Hertl, to me, its a bad contract because you got the frosting, icing, cookies, candy toppings, marshmallows, etc on top of approx 35% signing bonus, and the 8. Yuck.

8x8 was expected. He would have gotten it somewhere.
At least they opened up his NTC in the final years this time.

His contract isn't an issue. It's the big D contracts that are problematic.

I agree. Hertl got the contract he deserves. I just don't think the Sharks can afford to pay him that given their current structure without being severely restricted on what they can do for the next 4-5 years.

Doug Wilson needs to stop giving 8 year jumbo contracts for players into their mid-late thirties this is why they're struggling.

Appreciate your comment with all of the negativity. This contract isn't the problem.

It's really the Vlasic contract more than the Karlsson one too. If Karlsson could stay healthy, it'd be worth it. Who would have thought he'd play 50-60 games 4 years in a row. It's insane.

Burns contract is fine imo. Simek can't get back to where he was before that knee injury (also different coach/system).

Doug Wilson should get fired. It’s a fine deal for Hertl but not for the Sharks.

There's always ways to reduce cap.
Trade Burns for Savard or Karlsson for Petry. (Just examples!) Less cap and term.
You might take a loss at some point, but you don't always have to buy your way out.

You also don't "need" Karlsson @ $11M when you have Burns for 1RD. Big name shiny new players are nice, but if you're putting an $8-11M D on your 2nd pairing long term, you're doing something wrong.

As a Ducks fan, this Sharks cap situation makes me so happy. I feel like they're destined to mediocrity for the next 5-7 years with how many heavy contracts they have sitting with aging players. On the right team this contract is meh. But the Sharks don't have a roster that's competitive right now, and their core is old and getting older. I feel like they're leaning into mediocrity with every signing. I guess it's better than losing him for nothing though.

Doug Wilson: How much term do you want?

I swear to god, god is trolling me. I missed the Risto signing, Pavelski signing, Manson trade, Jost and Strum swap, Hertl signing and Chiarot trade.

Next up: Blake Comeau 1x1 extension.

The contract itself is fine, Hertl’s a really good Center but that’s the wrong direction to go in SJ, with Vlasic, Burns, EK, etc, you’re setting yourself up for more cap problem, don’t do the cycle of good player to big deals that blow up eventually. Should’ve rebuild

Eight year deals are incredibly risky for players in their late 20s and San Jose has already seen multiple like-deals go sour. Holding onto Hertl was a good decision and 8 mil is definitely in the ballpark of his value, but I'd be worried about the later years of that contract.

We'll have to wait and see though. Experience doesn't play in the favour of San Jose unfortunately.
