I suppose things can change quickly, but it is my sense that Kubalik is not on the Oilers radar at this moment in a meaningful way. I believe the focus remains on some blue-line help. A depth F is a possibility but not at or near top of the list.

Not sure either. The media which I just posted bellow is posting the opposite yesterday.

Whoever is proposing that Barrie trade needs their head read.

Giving up 1 year of Smith for Samorukov's career? Not worth it. Just ride it out for the year or trade him with 50% retained.

Kassian and a 1st for Kubalik? Not worth it. Keep the 1st rounder, Holloway will take that spot. Even Kane can be resigned for free. Kassian can be bought out.

Barrie for a 3rd and Appleton? Have you seen what defencemen are going for? Barrie is like .5 PPG defenceman with term. Come on.

Who in the media is suggesting this stuff

Even a buyout (God forbid) is a better option. I would probably bury him in the minors before trading him with 50% retained. You're absolutely right about wasting a good prospect to move the last year of Smith.

I would rather trade samorukov than a second round pick. He cant be sent down without waivers now and i think niemeleinen is a lock for the 3LD.

Ken holland has been known to shop for next year at trade deadlines. Case and point AA. In fact holland has tried to resign everyone he got at the deadline. My feeling is evander kane is not necessarily a sure thing for next year and he could easily get 5-7 million on a 1 year deal which puts edmonton out of the running.

I dont think looking at the prospects that Kane will be signed at all for next year. There just isnt room for him with Holloway ect almost ready.

I think holloway doesnt come up next year until there is an injury. Edmonton has very few NHL ready prospects in the AHL after this year it would be smart to stash a couple ELC contracts down there.

I wouldn't do either. Both ideas are poor.

Niemelainen isn't waiver eligible for several more years and he plays a lesser role in Bakersfield than Samorukov. I don't think either is a lock for 3LD but I'd give Samorukov the better odds.

That is a fair comment. I had no idea niemeleinen was still waiver inelligible next year.

Yeah, he's got either 1 more year in AHL (after this one) or 43 more NHL games before he's eligible for waivers. Probably 23-24 before he's subject to waivers.

no the mike smith has got to go thing is quite prevalent. There have been articles written about top 7 oilers that need to be traded and kassian and barrie are on there.

I think it would be a smart move to trade kassian on kubalik in order to secure a top 6 winger for next year.

Why would Kubalik sign for less than his QO? and he's got arbitration rights.

Nuge, Hyman, Puljujarvi are top 6 players. You've got Kane already here, and maybe Holloway, is that not enough? Why trade a 1st rounder for Kubalik when he isnt even playing to top 6 standards right now? 21 points in 61 games? Yamamoto has more points than that in less games - I didn't even mention him as the group of top 6 players. And I can tell you he won't cost you a 1st rounder to acquire and resign for 3M.

Foegele has the same amount of production - would you say Foegele is worth a 1st?

it isnt just a first it is kassian heading back.

kubalik had a good year playing beside toews who fell off the face of the planet with his play. I think draisaitl can replicate what kubalik and toews had.

We really don't need any forwards besides plugs for next year. Holloway will be on the team and that sets up for the top 12 being signed already.
But the year after we should have at least 3 NHL forwards ready.
Another goalie is where I would spend the money on. Forseberg or Husso
