Can't believe it. A Toronto trade for a top D man, that doesn't involve scraps and draft picks going to the other team!

With that being said I pass from Leafs POV. I would much rather snag a decent 4th dman using expendable assets and keep Nylander.

Leafs are pushing the top team in the league right now, without a great D core. We can survive with a competent D core going forward with Rielly, Gardiner, Dermott, Zaitsev, etc.. I want this forward group to grow and become one of the best in the league for awhile.

I'm not a Leaf supporter but I keep on seeing these trades that land Leafs a Dmen but at the expense of one of their young guns. Please look at the Leafs cap space. Isn't it more practical that Leafs just sign a UFA Dman, even it a short term vet and keep Nylander/Marner/Kapanen. And some teams are going to have trouble protecting all their NHL Dman before the Las Vegas draft. The Leafs should be able to make a deal which doesn't cost them a potential star. Hanifan, plays LHD. Same a Reilly, Gardiner, Marinin, Dermott and Nielsen LHD isn't the Leafs weakest position. And LHD are usually available.
So while people make these good intentioned trades to the Leafs, really there is a bigger picture when looking at value.

Why would the leafs trade for the guy they could've easily picked in the draft instead of marner. There is no reason with all the cap space they have that they won't be able to pick up a FA top 4 D without giving anything up.

Carolina would never trade Noah Hanifin for a player that is almost identical to Jeff Skinner. Plus you had two players go to Vegas instead of one. Why?
