Resigning Kane Pujli Yamo and McL is impossible

Created by: ceeque84
Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 18, 2022
Published: Mar. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
These are very conservative numbers compared to what I expect Kane, Pujli & Yamo will want to resign for, and they already put them over the cap.
Will Pujli & Yamo agree to bridge deals?? I dont think any team in the league would be willing to give Kane more than 2 or 3 yrs term wise, so I would think he will be looking for at least $5mill per.
IMAGINE if Klefbom is able to come back next season??
Holland has really handcuffed this team by giving Smith that 2 yr deal AND making that trade for Keith. Can he redeem himself by somehow moving Keith, Smith, Kassian, & Ryan off the books by next October?? Depending on who they can get in trades or FA signings Barrie and Foegle should absolutely be trade bait as well.
If Holloway is going to be a full timer next yr who of Kane, Pujli, Yamo, or McL should they trade or let walk??

He overspent on Nurse by about $2mil for sure. But i think the 2 yr deal to Smith & trading for Keith is really handcuffing them the most for next season.

or you just don't resign Kane, bring Holloway up to the NHL (which is reasonable to expect) and use that 4 million for either free agent goalie or a trade for a goalie, not sure who just gives you an option

Mcloed won’t break the bank that should be the easiest to get done and out of the way. 1.250 x 2 roughly.
The other three I don’t see being possible without moving kass or barrie which I personally don’t believe is best option. 2 of the 3 should be the goal. Which two? Kane snd jp if possible would be my priority. Bigger bodies that can also skate. This is why I often include yam in rental trades don’t see investing in further as an option. Nothing against yam it’s a cap causality moving forward.
Kane mcdavid Hyman
Mcloed Leon jp
That would be my ideal top six going into next year. If smith can play solid as he did last night down the stretch and kinda show the injuries were more of a fluke than age catching up to him could help a ton as well. Foegele I’d keep an eye on Monday wouldn’t be overly surprised to see his contract moved if not could happen in offseason to open up a bit more room with holloway in mind to take over his role next year.
Holloway nuge kass
Benson Ryan archie.
That’s how I have it penciled in at the moment.

It certainly is possible to bring back Kane, but it means moving out some cap. I think Kassian, Foegele and Barrie are the candidates - they don't have to move all three, but probably 2 of them. Like this:

With Skinner, Broberg and Holloway up, and Klefbom still on LTIR, the Oilers have $10,518,205 in cap space with 17 players signed. So they need to add 6 more.

Puljujarvi: $4.25M x 8 (Kotkaniemi's rumored new contract)
Yamamoto: $2.75M x 3
McLeod: $1.175M x 2 (Puljujarvi's current deal)

Now we're at $2,343,205 cap space with 20 signed (12F, 6D, 2G). That's a pretty decent team, with just enough to sign 3 league-minimum guys to sit in the press box.

BUT, that doesn't include Kane or a goalie upgrade. And I'm not comfortable going into training camp with a Smith - Skinner tandem. So some pieces need to be moved out in order retain Evander Kane or to make any improvements.

Let's say Smith retires and the Oilers move on from Kassian and Foegele. Of course there likely is salary coming back in those transactions too, but for the sake of keeping things simple let's assume they're moved for non-roster assets. That opens up $10,493,205 cap space with 17 signed. If you sign 4 guys at league minimum ($3M total) that leaves $7.5M to split between Kane and another goalie. It's possible to make that work, but not easy.

I think kassian needs to be moved at minimum. I don't think kane is going to be in edmonton's price range. Especially on a short term contract it makes teams pay stupid money.

I dont like that 4th line. Shore>Benson at this point. Woodcroft has got Shore buzzin out there! Benson is looking more and more like a career AHLer. I like Archie, but if the covid travel mandates stay the same in Canada i cant see them resigning him. So a big checking 4th line RW is definitely on the get list for this summer.
I agree that Yamo should prob be the guy to go, just seems crazy to think about that now if him and McD really continue to click. Kane and Pujli are indeed much bigger bodies and with the Oilers perpetually being a soft team to play against, yamo may have to be the casualty here.
I am always back and forth about Kassian, and I usually lean towards keeping him, he is the perfect 3rd line winger if he could just keep some consistency in his game. I think Foegle is the better guy to move over Kass if Holloway is coming up and McL continues to play most of his minutes on LW.
I also wonder if maybe Ryan could be moved out in the summer and a cheaper, bigger, 4th line C could be picked up from the ufa list?

If Pujli will sign for 8 yrs for less than $5/mill per I say they do it ASAP. But i think his agent is going to bet on his client and negotiate a bridge deal.
I definitely dont like the thought of a Smith/Skinner tandem going into next yr either!

I think they need to do as much as possible to get Kane resigned. True power forwards dont exactly grown on trees these days in the NHL.

I think its a big L for the oilers if they dont push very hard to get Kane resigned. Yes Holloway will most likely be a regular in the lineup next yr, but it is too much of a gamble to rely on a rookie making a significant impact in his first season.

Big L but they can't match 7 million.

After all the virtue-signalling, holier than thou talk alot of the teams did about "not touching Kane because he is a woman beater and locker room cancer", do you think someones going to offer him $7mill per? Im not saying he doesnt hockey well enough to get that much, but jeez the Oilers took a bashing on twitter for signing the guy to a 1 yr show me deal. Funny how quickly all the woke assholes forget when he puts up points every night.

Don't know if I would say it's a big L. If Holland signs him to 4 or 5 million dollar deal for 3 or 4 years and he does something off the ice that causes an issue in the room... Everyone is going to be calling out Holland.

If the Kotkaniemi deal comes in at that figure, I think there's a precedent for Puljujarvi getting the same. We'll see... he's had a bridge deal already, I don't know why Edmonton would walk him to UFA status on his next contract. I see term or trade.

Benson barely got his first sniff in the nhl I wouldn’t place too much judgement on him yet. If he spends the rest of the year playing top line minutes in the ahl he could be that much better and stronger next year. He’s got room to grow his game still very young. Shore ideally next year gets pushed to press box. I remember when Holland signed him and during a media availablility he touched on that and made mention he’s a great pro that understands his role on the team and keeps a positive attitude when he’s not in the everyday line up but someone that can be relied upon when needed.
