A gamble

Description
Rakell acquired at the deadline, for picks/prospect assets (potentially/probably, one of Lundkvist or Kravstov). On the depth chart, he will swap places with Kakko if necessary.

To make room for the upcoming extension, Strome walks in free agency (maybe trade his rights for a low pick if possible), and Chytil is promoted to the 2C. This is a pretty big gamble. But if he's going to succeed, this will be the place and the time to do it.

The backup goalie can be anyone. Blais is given a do-over contract. Kakko signed to a short term prove it contract.

Next Year Rangers have 13 contracts signed with 14.8mil in projected space, with major pieces Laffy (~4mil), Miller (~3mil), and Chytil/2C if he doesn't succeed (~4mil) to sign. That leaves 3.8million for 4-7 contracts. While those contracts will be bottom 6/bottom pair/backup goalie/scratches, that's still ridiculously tight.

I don't really agree with doing this, just trying to put on paper how a Rakell trade/extension could look. I do suppose you'd have to leave out Vatrano to make it work for the future, or give him a short term deal.

Get rid of it Vatrano, trade kravtsov for a pick and Nemeth isn't even that bad that we gotta get rid of kravtsov to get rid of 2.5 x 2

Rangers (and other teams) might have do that type of deal to get rid of unwanted cap like Nemeth.
Rakell isn't going to sign for so little.
Lots of RFAs to sign in 23/24 with little expiring contracts makes a problem.

What has Rakell done lately to deserve more than what Saad got?

Moreso the problem with a Nemeth trade is his bonehead M-NTC. So he could block a trade to teams willing to eat the contract, you know. That's why he's gonna have to be a package deal, whether it's Kravstov or a pick, etc. But he's not a bad player, just a weird contract. He can definitely be a serviceable bottom pairing defenseman on any team. The Rangers' cap crunch makes him expendable.

You might be right on Rakell's contract. It's a tough thing, because he was nearly a PPG for a while, but he's dipped down now. I don't like this route anyway, but just putting it on paper vs discussing it in chatrooms to see how the money works, you know
