If anyone is adding a first round pick, it would be NYR. Jarvis in his rookie year compared to Laf’s sophomore year, has more points this season than Laf does in either of the seasons he has played. Jarvis has looked so much better than Laf this year, that swapping them would be rather dumb, particularly for the Canes.

Now, if you drop Jarvis and the first to a third and add Ponomarev and Gunler, you would be a lot closer to a deal. 2 quality prospects, one Center and one RW that can play LW, that are about a year from the NHL or closer, and a third. If it needs to be a second, that might be ok. But trading the better player and a first for someone who hasn’t been that good after being selected 1OA, that is very dumb.

Rangers counter with Libor Hajek for Aho with 50% retention plus 2 years of 1st round picks.

The bet, though, for Carolina is the Rangers potentially buying high on Jarvis and the Canes buying low on Laf. Rangers wouldn't trade Laf to us without Jarvis, so again, this is about two teams agreeing to gamble for positions of need.

A true betting man's swap would be New York offering Lafreniere straight up for Jarvis. Getting a 1st to at least partially cover your butt makes it less of a gamble.
