Clearing cap space in the offseason

Created by: Chigurrhh
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 23, 2022
Published: Mar. 23, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Anaheim seems to like Penguins 4th liners so here you go. McGinn is fine but his contract simply does not make sense for a team with a few fourth-line-ready players.

Seattle could use a solid number 4-type defenseman. So here you go.

No one wants Zucker's contract so he stays I guess.

Trading McGinn is a bad idea. He is Tanev’s replacement on a better contract. No other forward does what he does, which is offer enough skill to play up and down a lineup while also bringing toughness to this team that it lacks from our other forwards.

He makes too much money for what he is and O'Connor can do most of those things while offering more speed and skill. If you want to add toughness, do it for league min in free agency. They are getting that toughness from Brian Boyle for a fraction of McGinn's cost.

McGinn is a beast. He is worth every penny of that.

Not to be a fourth liner, no. No fourth-line winger in the league is worth that.

You can like a player and realize he's not worth his cap hit.

I don’t think they trade mcginn a year after they signed him to that long term deal. Take away erods 3.5M which would be a big mistake seeing as though he’s come back to earth. Reduce heinen’s figure to 1.5-2 and you can resign rakell at ~5M or just under that. They can have something like this
Guentzel-sid-rust
Kapanen-geno-rakell
Heinen-carter-zucker
Mcginn-blueger-zohorna

fringe third maybe? On no team except maybe Arizona is he a top-six player. He just doesn't have that kind of skillset. He's never been that and his stats and underlying numbers do not support that.

How can you watch him play and say he's a second liner? lol

On the Penguins he's a solid fourth liner.

Rodrigues $3.5Mx5

What is the wild wild world of sports? The absolute craziness f that makes me believe that this entire AGM is a joke for laughs.

The only way a contract for Rodrigues should have $3.5M on it is if it is across three years, $1.3M + $1.2M + $1.2M, for $3.5M total.

$3.5Mx5... oofff

His shooting percentage is higher than Zucker, Kapanen, Blueger, Boyle, and even ERod. Why would we get rid of him when he doesn’t even make that much? Zucker is clearly a waste of cap. Kapanen is the next best option to move on from.

....why are you citing shooting percentage?

McGinn is a decent finisher shooting above his career average this season. That's what he brings to the fourth line. He also doesn't drive play like a guy like Rodrigues does. When Rodrigues is on the ice, the Penguins generate a lot more scoring chances and allow fewer. The Penguins get significanatly fewer chances to score when McGinn is on the ice.

Look at their isolated impacts.

McGinn isn't as great as you think he is.

Zucker is also paid too much, yes. And I explained why he's unlikely to move in the post. He makes so much money that you probably have to attach a pick to him like Vegas tried to with Dadonov.
