Letang is willing to do 7 over 5 years. Why overpay him when we know what he wants? If you do that, nix the Seattle trade, nix the NJ trade, dump deslaurier, and dump Domi, you probably have enough to keep Rust and then some.
Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Rakell-Geno-Nischuskin
Zucker-Carter-Kapanen
McGinn-Blueger-Zohorna/O’Conner/Nylander
Dumo-Letang
Matheson-Marino
POJ-Ruhwedel
Friedman
Jarry
Fleury

That’s a much better lineup and gives you space for a deadline trade or two if needed.

Gotta start letting these young guys with energy play rather than overpaying for guys like Deslaurier and ERod that aren’t much better, if even better at all.

Not for Detroit they say thank you and it's been a pleasure doing business with you.

Says who? If that were the case he'd probably already be signed (altho pens probably want less years).

Said Letang, as implied in my post. Pens want 3 years

Let's do a deal.

Detroit gets Pettersson and Kapanen (saves you a bundle of cap).

PIT gets Erne and McIsaac (cheap grinder and a good LD prospect still exempt from waivers).

How do we make this work?

Send link, you chirped OP for his contract, so we need more than "trust me bro." I've read he wants a raise on his current, and Sevarelli said above 7, no one has said 7.

No, that won't work for Detroit - we need Sundqvist. Isn't McIsaac interesting for you? He's developing nicely in Grand Rapids and is waiver exempt until the 23/24 season.

If we find a 2C in FA then Mitchell Stephens could be available - very quick bottom-6 centre that is a scoring threat on the PK.

Another option is Erne and a 2nd round pick.

No, that's out of the question, he'll be on the roster next season.

Seravalli reports that his sources indicate that Letang and his representatives have asked for a 5-year extension in the ballpark of $7 million per year. The Penguins are said to still not be willing to discuss a deal of that length.

This is from about a week and a half ago. So idk where you got that seravalli said above 7. The pens management said they’d be willing to give him a raise if he took a 2-3 year deal instead.

https://thehockeywriters.com/penguins-letang-sends-management-message/

If you told any NHL executive their best defenseman is committed to the team, he’s willing to take less money to stick around, and he’s embraced the mentor role to lead the organization’s youngsters, they would ask where to sign up. Letang has done exactly this, and there’s no reason why Hextall and Burke shouldn’t be offering a contract extension at some point this season.

Here’s another article stating he is willing to take a pay cut in exchange for a longer term contract.

No thank you, we just traded ZAR who is an expensive fourth liner that doesn’t bring much offense. Don’t really want a more expensive one. I think the pens would rather just trade Petty for a pick and/or prospect.

I just think there should be a deal to make here that both teams can live with. Pettersson and Kapanen will both get more icetime in Detroit than they got in Pittsburgh and PIT gets a cap relief that'll help a lot. I'ts just a question of finding the right pieces that'll make it work.

I'd consider picks or players like Oesterle, Stephens, Erne, McIsaac, and possibly Smith or Rasmussen or Juolevi.

Oh I don’t think they’d mind trading Kap either. Just would much rather it be for picks/prospects/or another change of scenery young middle 6 winger like Gurianov, Kubalik, etc.
I think a deal could be made depending on what Detroit would be willing to give up for them.
I’d say out of the players you suggested that Rasmussen and McIsaac make the most sense.
