Sanheim and Hart

Created by: hockeyconnor97
Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 24, 2022
Published: Mar. 24, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Goalies are inconsistent, but I like Hart and think he turns around and becomes an above average goalie.

- Defence is heavily improved in this lineup, no major weak spots defensively. Nurse-Bouch play with the top lines as an offensive pair. Sanheim-Ceci is great defensively, has a bit of offence mixed in too. Bottom pair also is very good defensively. Broberg comes in when injuries happen. Ideally he takes someone's spot this or next year.

- Offence is a bit weaker without Kane, but the additions of Holloway and Geekie along with the growth of younger players should make up for that. Nuge line matches up with top 6 lines of other teams, insane defensively. Could rearrange and put Hyman in the top 6, but I like the idea of having three equal lines and letting Mcdavid and Draisaitl do their thing.

To mea that's way too much to give up for one year of Sanheim and Hart.

Probably has an extension in place for Sanheim, Hart is an RFA so that's not really an issue. We might be a bit screwed after this season with Bouch and Sanheim extensions, but I think they could make it work. Lucic and Sekera coming off the books would help

This is borderline objectively incorrect. He's putting up near league average numbers on maybe one of the worst defensive groups iced in the salary cap era

Last season Carter Hart was by far the worst starting goalie in the salary cap era.

This season, for all goalies with 10+ starts he ranks:
28th in SV%
39th in GAA
I don’t really feel like doing the math, but I don’t think his 13-27 record is going to be very high up in win percentage either.

So tell me more about how he’s been league average.

The overall league average for save percentage is .909 and Hart is a .910
The overall league average for goals against average is 2.89 and Hart is 2.97

And this is while playing on a team that's bottom 5 in the league standings. I'm not going to say Hart has been great, but he's far from the reason why the Flyers are near the bottom of the league.

Last season, yes, Hart was probably the worst goaltender. While some of it was the team, a lot of it was him just playing poorly.

EDIT: I should also point out 28th and 39th rankings you gave was out of 69 goalies I believe. So that still falls under being in the middle of the pack.

Um, Seattle won't give up Geekie for Barrie, Geekie is only going to get better and he holds 100 times more value then Barrie. He also is a young centermen on a great contract. And will be an RFA, do you're reshearche before you look to acquire a player.

I think there is a little more nuance to Carter Hart and his play so far this year. Out of all goaltenders who have at least 1000 TOI at 5v5 this year [46 qualifiers], here is how Hart stacks up:

32.6 shots against per 60 (9th most)
0.925 SV% (14th best)
8.87 HD shots against per 60 (11th most)
0.839 HDSV% (20th best)
7.44 GSAA (14th best)
3.44 HDGSAA (19th best)

I think this is about or better than league average for a goaltender. He hasn't been shutting the lights out, but he's also getting shelled every single night.

I’m not going to dive into fancy stats, but there are plenty of goalies that are playing on teams taht aren’t so good that have performed better:
Sorokin on the islanders: .927 SV%
Saros is playing practically every night for an “okay,” preds squad with a .922
Stolarz has a .919 for anaheim
Forsberg has a .918 for the sens
Varlamov has a .917
Reimer has a .916

I could go on for a while.

He hasn’t been league average. If you look at every single goalie that’s taken a breath on NHL ice this season, you might be able to pull some numbers to make it look like that, but we’re talking about guys that have actually played. We’re talking about starting goalies, or at very least backups that get a lot of starts.
29th, and 39th do not represent leave average in a 32 team league.

I wouldn't consider what I quoted as "fancy" but I don't quite think there is as much support that he's been "bad", especially considering how awful the Flyers defense has been this year. Flyers aren't gonna make this deal.

There have been 111 goalies that have played in 1 game this season. 69 of them have played at least 10+ games, which is the range you used. So hart is 29th out of 69 and 39th of 69 respectively, which again is about middle of the road.

But let's break it down further to starting goalies only. And not using any "fancy" stats to give context. There are 9 teams that have goalies within 10 games of each other (devils have 3 goalies within 10 games of each other). So you can consider that tandem situation. So there's 42 goalies.

Carter Hart ranks 22 of 42 and 28 of 42 in SV% and GGA. So among starting goalies/tandem situations, he's about middle of the road in SV% and below average in GAA. And again, this is while on a team in the bottom 1/4th of the league. Only one goalie has done better while having their team in the bottom 1/4th, which is Anton Forsberg who's doing outstanding with a .918 and 2.75

You’re really really reaching to find, “average,” out of this.

There have been 968 skaters in the NHL this season. The 484th goal scorer has four goals. Is an average NHL goal scorer going to have four goals at this point in the season?

Take those same 42 goalies I was talking about, average SV% is .911 and GGA is 2.78. Which again says SV% he's around league average for a starting/tandem goalie and below average in GGA.
