CBJ 22-23 thoughts

Created by: cbjthrowaway
Team: 2022-23 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 28, 2022
Published: Mar. 28, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just kinda messing around / outlining some NHL GM mode stuff.

Priorities:
- Reshape and improve the defense (lower burden on Werenski, add a difference-maker, have a third pair with a clear identity)
- Add a play-driving top six center
- Give young guys expanded roles without overwhelming them
- Get a stopgap backup goalie while Tarasov heals up

In:
- Trocheck (perfect 1C for this team IMO)
- Chychrun (creates a 1A/1B with Werenski, gives CBJ two 'top' pairs to utilize, keeping Z fresh)
- Johnson (gets to play top six role at wing alongside two quality NHL players)
- Savard (can play with Z or Gavy depending on Peeke's growth; if Peeke is on third pair their identity is physicality, if it's Savard they're shot suppressors)
- Lomberg (gives an option for physical games/matchups, adds energy guy)
- Korpisalo (stopgap backup goalie with familiarity while Tarasov heals up)

Out:
- Marchenko (hard to part with, but worth it if Chychrun is coming back)
- CBJ 2022 pick (non-lottery, somewhere in 10-14 range)
- Nyquist (bona fide top six forward and leader, but filling gap at C with Trocheck took priority)
- Roslovic (talented player who isn't a great long-term fit; more useful as a trade chip)
- Bean (see Roslovic)
- Bemstrom (needs change of scenery but has some upside, perfect to move for a useful cap dump in Savard)
- Foudy (would be awesome in the bottom six here, just can't clear up a spot so need to move while he has some value)

End result:
- Top two pairs will have pretty even ice time around 21-23 minutes (no more 29 minute games for Werenski)
- Third defensive pair that handles tough matchups (freeing up top two pairs to make more impact offensively)
- Aggressive PK unit with a ton of options
- PP unit with more skill (removing Jenner as netfront guy, allowing for more movement -- Jake runs from behind net, Trocheck plays bumper, Johnson on half-wall, Chychrun up high) -- three angles they can feed Laine from (down low, cross-ice or from the point)
- Giving Laine a real 1C and a highly skilled playmaking winger who can create space.
- Building chemistry between Sillinger and Bjorkstrand; also putting Sillinger (who is at his best going to the net) with a playmaker who specializes in those type of plays in Voracek.
- Texier/Jenner/Chinahov third line that can bring energy AND produce offense.

Habs would decline that deal with the context of what else is happening with them.

With Petry likely gone in the summer they wont be much appetite to trade another veteran dman as they would only have edmundson and Savard at that point. So the move would have to be pretty special.

Bemstrom is not special enough for that. He turns 23 in june and is struggling to stay in the lineup on a nightly basis. He may become a full time nhl player but likely nothing special. The habs already have too many wingers of his calibre so he doesnt move the needle.

I hate to break it to you but Trocheck isn’t a 1c and honestly the only difference between him and Roslovic is 3 years in age and 12 points and for the most part Trocheck has been with some pretty good line mates with Svechnikov and Necas, when Roslovic has been with Laine, Voracek, Bjorkstrand and/or Nyquist, he’s actually been pretty good, but when he’s stuck with Domi, Danforth or Bemstrom and on lower lines he’s hasn’t been as effective. Roslovic has actually been better than people think he has been.

Also Chychrun has not been good this year in a exposed role, he’s never had a dzs% higher than 50, now he’s up to 54% and having his worst season defensively. I wouldn’t pay that big of a premium for him, not that I don’t think LA probably beats that offer with better prospects.

Don't see these as good trades or signings for the Jackets other then the Nyquist trade but idk if anyone is really giving a 1st for him at this point even if it's a late 1st, that Trocheck contract would get ugly sooner than later.

I think the Jackets should keep Roslovic and really hope it works out with Laine for them, I'm rooting for them and the Jackets.

I don't really see how any of these outside of the Gus trade make us better and I would be surprised if someone gave us a first for him.

I would love to add Chychrun, but not at that costs. That trade roughly equals 3 firsts and 2 seconds, which is too much to give up.

I don't get why we would trade bean for a scratched winger and a fourth. He is worth way more than that.

I agree with adding some physicality on defense, but we need more of an enforcer than Savard. Peeke and gavrikov can play the shot blocking role that savard held. We need someone that can defend our young guys and play a sound defensive game. Savard isn't capable of that.

Not sure why we would move roslovic for and go sign trocheck at that price. To me they are both middle six centers trocheck isn't worth the premium. Swap roslovic and bean in that chychrun trade and don't sign trocheck.

Most CBJ fans would say no because he's a young RHD who's been playing a ton of minutes (21:15 TOI average this year) – but personally I'd be open to moving him + a winger for a top two center and maybe a veteran third pairing defenseman coming back on the other side.
