Value of Monahan

Created by: LikeABoss
Team: 2022-23 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 21, 2022
Published: Mar. 29, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lately I've been thinking the Wings shouldn't spend anything on this experiment... However, they can afford to spare some picks, and if they were able to get him better ice time and rehab his game, maybe they could recoup value next TDL. Is there a safe value to aim at trying to flip him? If he has a good season with a new team, he might be worth a 2nd + at the TDL. Would a 2nd + Chase Pearson be too risky?

Nah, nobody's gonna let Calgary off the hook that easy. It's obvious that they need cap help if they want to keep Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Mangiapane (along with their other FAs), and Monahan is a $6.375M healthy scratch. They'll have to pay to have someone help their cap situation, as nobody will claim him for free off waivers.

a team like detroit could be a good fit, calgary is realisitcally probably looking to give him away for free/get rid of him this offseason imo with big contract extensions on the horizon. Maybe he plays well you could recoup and asset if you retain 50% at the next years tdl but i cant say i see him being worth anything at 6+ million to a contender/buyer next season

What happened to Monahan the past few years? He used to be a monster. He is still quite young. How did he fall off so much?

He should easily be living up to his contract...

Would Calgary buy him out? Or maybe do something like the Tyler Johnson deal?

The problem with buying him out is that it only saves them $2.375M in cap space. With the cap going up $1M next year, that only gets them $3.375M extra space, and all of that gets eaten up by Gaudreau & Tkachuk's raises immediately.

They're going to need as much cap space as possible to make this upcoming offseason work.

I didn’t post it lol, I just tested it for fun a few weeks ago. I had Tkachuk and Gaudreau at 9m, Mangiapane at 6m, and Kylington at 3m on a bridge deal

I like how this lineup looks, and the cap hit actually helps the Wings get to the floor. If he has a season like this, you're right, he's worth much less than Namestnikov just looking at the numbers and cap hit.

Did you move Monahan or Lucic? I don't see how it's at all possible...

Yeah you’re right I moved Monahan lol. But I’m confident Treliving will be able to extend all of Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Mangiapane, he has to

So I kind of figured Calgary didn't need to make a move, and if they were in a bind they could probably just buy him out. I didn't want to check though so thanks for checking! I imagine Calgary would be looking for more than nothing, and from the Wing's side, I can only see the value making sense basing it on flipping him next TDL.

if they have to pay, it will probably not be very significant. i think he will be fairly easy to move, just because he has inly 1 year left. teams know that if they acquire him, there is a good chance they may flip him at the deadline for profit. if he was on waiver,a team with lots of cap space would probably acquire him if he clears.

At that high of a cap hit, it's going to be a significant cost if it's a simple cap/salary dump, like a low 1st/high 2nd. But I don't think that will happen. I think it's going to be a player for player + pick such as (since we're on Detroit here) Monahan + 2nd for Suter or something to that effect.

yeah i can defenitly see something like this. calgary are trying to compete so some form of hockey trafes would work. lets not forget 2 years ago stepan, also making 6M and having stats like mohonam was traded to the sens for a second!

Or he's just waiting until next season to start trying again. Just because you play in the NHL doesn't mean you can't get burnt out.

I would gladly take Monahan. You don't go from perennial 30 goals scorer to 4th line fodder over night at the ripe age of 27. He's still good. Just unmotivated, pissed at being demoted and needs a change of scenery. That's it.

As long as a team can send back a little cap or CGY retains a little, a deal is absolutely there. Will never need to go to waivers. I'm sure he's not going to play hardball with his NTC if he could be put on waivers and get picked up by any team so its just a matter of finding the right fit. It'll get done this offseason. Book it.

28M and need 9 players signed, with two of those players taking 18+ of it could be tough. Really Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Mangiapane could easily eat up 23-25M of that. Then Kylington should get a nice raise and the rest of the roster. I don't think it works as good as some people think.

As of now, no. But it sounds like they'll try to move a few vets out this summer so there could be. All depends on what happens with Carey if who (if) they sign any free agents.

The way I see it, a team claims Monahan, he puts together a decent season, they retain half his salary and can flip him at the deadline for a second. CGY moves cap, MTL gets a second rounder.
