Is Sharks the most stagnated team in the league

Created by: justaBoss
Team: 2022-23 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 29, 2022
Published: Mar. 29, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm just thinking about this team and I can't help but think that there's no sense of direction in/for this team. They're not good enough to compete, they're not bad enough to get the absolute top picks, and the team is so full of anchor contracts that if this team was an actual ship it would've already sank down and the crew would've long since been eaten by, rather ironically, the sharks. In other words, the anchors are so heavy they can't even be moved. Adding by subtracting don't really work here.

Taking on a team like this in AGM is extremely hard, because I don't have anywhere to start if I wanted to make a "realistic" post. Like, about only thing they could do is wait for 3-5 years until the first anchor contracts expire.

Correct, this team has no direction. I wouldn’t do any of these trades though. They give away picks and players for depth players that really aren’t needed and don’t help this team contend or build.

Completely serious here, they should hire Jim Benning as ASSISTANT GM. Assistant is the important part, cause hes an awful gm. But the one thing he was good at was finding come pretty decent players/prospects deeper in the draft. That's how the Wild got out of it. They found Greenway, Kaprisov, Rossi, etc all deeper in the draft and because of it, they're on the way to turning the franchise around without making any major signings/trades in the last few years. That's how San Jose has to turn it around, because that is literally their only option.

I have no idea what this team is doing, they just keep extending players and making things worse for their future. They don't have a team good enough to compete for a cup, they don't have cap space or assests to get much better, and they refuse to sell and rebuild.

Banging their heads on a brick wall, expecting it to break until you've banged long enough.

They’re trying to compete without doing anything helpful to aid that hope lol. They can’t rebuild with the number of bad contracts they have (couture, vlasic and Karlsson are the worst offenders). Sharks can and should move Burns but have refused to for years. And then they go acquire Kahkonen when we already have Reimer who is a total stud and Hill who’s had injury troubles but overall looks promising. So it’s just a lot of contradicting decisions.

The sharks have drafted plenty of good players later in the drafts, that hasn’t been their problem. They have had hardly any 1st or 2nd round picks because they’ve traded them to go all in.

Also Kaprizov was the only one “found” later in a draft that you mention (5th rounder). Greenway was a 2nd round pick and Rossi was literally a top 10 pick.

Oh 100%. San Jose is in the least enviable position in the entire league.

So much money locked up long term, all in guys that just aren’t good. But they’re not horrible either. Good enough so the sharks probably aren’t going to bottom out for a top 5 pick, bad enough and expensive enough so that the team has absolutely no shot of competing.

The sharks have genuinely no hope of success over the next five years.

Frankly, that isn’t what a GM does. You think he has time to pour over tape from thousands of prospects? No shot. Thats what an amateur scouting staff is for.

Stagnent. Yep that what happens in a cap strapped league and where a team has "lots" of bad expensive long term contracts...some which have NTCs. But as suggested above...just pray that some gems can be found on cheap contracts.

Realistically what can they do though? They have Burns, Karlsson, Vlasic and Couture on very hard to move NTC contracts. They're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. Can't really rebuild and can't really go for it. They absolutely needed to trade Hertl for futures then Meier and then could have really rebuilt. Now, I think its impossible. They're just going to try and make the best of it with what they got going forward.

Well they have more talent than my team but those contracts ooofffff - my advice is stem-cell therapy for all your older players - I heard a guy on Joe Rogan saying it turned back the clock 5-10 years - Couture's contract at 33 pretty iffy at 28 not so bad lol.

lets be honest here. Anything after the top 10 is difficult. Then on, the difference between a first rounder and a second rounder is small. The difference between a second rounder and a third is even smaller. So hitting consistently in the first round after the 15th pick isnt easy.

1st round talent is way better than 3rd round talent…and again Rossi was an easy top 10 pick. That’s like the sharks saying they found Timo in the draft when he was a top 10 pick or Hertl at like 17. Also picking a guy in the 2nd round typically has much more talent and potential than a 3rd round level. They are safer bets for a reason. It’s not common to find star and quality players later. Greenway and Rossi are easy drafts. Greenway isn’t even that good.

Exactly they have no choice but to go forth with the core and try to find young guys around. the Hertl signing made it pretty clear a total teradown is not happening

Trade Simek, Trade Hill or Reimer. Try to rehab Lebanc so you can trade him.
Resign Barabonov and then try to find a scoring winger and hope Eklund, Bordoleau, Gregor, Weisblatt that a few of them can break thru.
