Retool for another run

Created by: AWhiteOreo
Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 31, 2022
Published: Mar. 31, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pretend that Lou retires and someone who understands that there is sadly, in fact, a salary cap every year and your actions will have consequences.

Islanders have a decent core of players, a good young goalie, and some promising youth coming through. Some tweaks here and there with better cap management, they can easily finish ahead of teams like Washington next season.

TRADE LOGIC
Ottawa: Ottawa gets $3M of cap for only $1.25M more actual dollars, plus a top 9 veteran winger to help the younger guys; I have to imagine the Sens will be looking to at least be competetive next year, if not playoff contenders. Del Zotto isn't a terrible option at $2M for 1 year, plus Islanders gets some picks and clear cap space. Bailey hasn't been the same level of player the last couple years, but he's still good for 10 goals and 40 points.

Edmonton: The value on this one might be a bit off, but the skeleton makes sense. Edmonton upgrades their goaltending a lot while only paying $1.8M more (not factoring in that Koskinen's contract is done after this year). Islanders will have some more cap, retaining some money to improve the prospect and/or pick they get makes sense. I think a Lavoie quality player is a good fit for this deal.

FREE AGENT LOGIC
Nino: Obvious, Islanders get another shooting option, they desperately offensive help and gives Barzal something to work with. Also a little reunion now that Nino is more seasoned.
Cole: A good veteran defensive player who will allow Dobson to play his game confidently. Seeing this now with Chara pairing, however, Cole should be a much better option than Chara. Also a piece than can move to bottom pair if a mid season trade is made.

Hmmm I forgot about that. I was also looking at Colorado as a spot as well. Get back someone like Johnson + a first? I think both teams would benefit there

I think Washington is an interesting destination for him if they want a veteran goalie next year.

The QO for Barzal is gonna be the nail in the coffin for NYI. He's a great player don't get me wrong, but the way he plays is not a 10+ million player. Yeah the cap is going up but you are going to have to sign some marquee free agents in order to be a cup contender. It's not like NYI has top of the line prospects to fill the gaps in the lineup. At least Raty has turned his game around a bit. Gotta hope for a lot more from Dobson and Wahlstrom.
