Why trade for Ladd? Or re-sign Jones when you have 3 goalies in the org who could split backup?

And ARI is not paying to take on JVR

If the Flyers move JVR it's going to be to dump his contract in full

The deal above allows the Flyers to get an asset and effectively reduce JVR's cap hit to his buyout amount. It's foolish to trade assets to remove JVR for 1 season.

JVR carries more value to Arizona than Ladd on and off the ice. The salaries are about the same but JVR's cap hit is higher. Ladd's salary is mostly signing bonus so a deal before July 1st saves Arizona actual dollars but uses up more in Cap Space on JVR. Now on the ice it's not a question. Ladd is a spent player and likely a 4th liner at best or an AHLer. JVR can still produce 20 goals. Arizona makes a minimal trade here, spends more of their cap to reach the floor, spends less actual money, and then ends up with a better hockey player with the optic of trying to improve.

Next time I see a team split the backup job between three goalies (no injuries) will be the first time. That's not a successful formula. Jones is a capable backup and if he signs for $1 million you have to do it.
