Trade-downs at draft

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 2, 2022
Published: Apr. 2, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I used The Athletic’s draft pick value chart for numerical values of picks.

In this scenario, Cooley, Wright and Slafkovsky are drafted with first three picks. NJD is on the clock at #4 and looking to trade down.

Just exploring ideas….
Trades
1.
NJD
  1. Boeser, Brock
  2. 2022 1st round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
#14 overall = 5.1
VAN
  1. Zacha, Pavel
  2. 2022 1st round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
#4 overall = 9.0

9.0 - 5.1 = 3.9 (value for 21st overall selection). So in other words, the gap between Zacha and Boeser would have to be equal to the value of 21st overall pick to be fair).
2.
NJD
NJD selects Ryan Chesley at #14
    VAN
VAN selects Simon Nemec at #4
      3.
      NJD
      1. Fiala, Kevin
      2. 2022 1st round pick (MIN)
      Additional Details:
      #23 overall = 3.6
      MIN
      1. 2023 1st round pick (NJD)
      Additional Details:
      #4 overall = 9.0

9.0 - 3.6 = 5.4 (value for 12th overall selection). So in other words, it would be pricing Fiala equal to 12th pick.

(Note it would be 2022 pick, but had to use 2023 as placeholder)
      4.
      NJD
NJD selects Filip Messr at #23
        MIN
MIN selects Brad Lambert at #4

With all due respect, you don't know what the pick will be for the devils..so Minnesota will not be adding fiala and 1st round pick. Ottawa gm would give up a top 7 to top 10 protected for fiala. Most Ottawa fans have agreed to it

Reading doesn't seem to be your thing but here goes anyway. He clearly says the scenario is it is draft day and NJ is on the clock with pick #4 and wants to trade back. He used the Athletic's draft rankings to project picks. Also this is a fantasy website where people with no inside info toss around ideas for fun, you should try it sometime.

Hmmm.. not saying no but where would be fit?

Assuming our top line is Milano Zegras Terry, 2nd like being Comtois McTavish Konecny?

I haven’t seen him play many games at all so not sure

If Wright, Cooley and Slafkovsky go in the Top 3, the Devils shouldn't trade down, take Nemec. Your D-core could be one of the best in the entire league rather soon. You'd have to chose 3 from Hughes, Mukhamadullin, Graves, Siegenthaler, Bahl and Smith on the left side and Hamilton, Nemec, Severson, (Smith,) Walsh and, sadly, Subban on the right side. Could then trade some of the ones that woudln't get much TOI.

Yeah just like that. He would help McTavish or you can switch him and Terry

Agree, that is the most likely scenario. But I also think a defensive group of...

          Siegenthaler -- Severson
          Graves -- Hamilton
          Mukhamadullin -- Hughes
          Smith -- Chesley
          Bahl -- Walsh
          Edwards -- McCarthy

...would be nearly as strong as it would with Nemec/Jiricek in there. Also, Subban is done at end of this year. They have already announced they won't be resigning him.

In three different trades? Or one massive 6-team deal?!

McLeod is a role player for us, but an important one, especially for defensive zone faceoffs and centering our checking line. The one guy in our system who most closely resembles his skillset was traded to Montreal at the deadline (Nate Schnarr). So I doubt Devils have any plans on moving McLeod anytime soon.

I could see VAN going for something like that at the draft if they have a player they like available to them. And Nemec would probably one of those.

This is interesting. But can you really say that Boeser is 1 Pavel Zacha better than Fiala and 9 spots in what is generally considered a weak draft? I get the argument but i gotta believe Fiala and Boeser are near equal value, i may be way off, and so then in my head Zacha is worth 9 spots in a weak draft. Straighten me out if I'm way off.

It's interesting for sure. Guerin (or really Brackett) would have to be super confident whoever is picked at 4 can be a top line/paring player. I'd hope we end up with Savoie, Geekie, or Cooley over Lambert though.

I like the concept but I rather keep the high pick and trade for Boeser/Fiala another way

Boeser is likely only traded for a top pairing RHD. Your 4OA can be exactly that if Nemec is available
