My off-season approach

Description
Values might be off, but this is how I would approach the off season, so it doesn’t really matter. For the Chychrun trade, Arizona gets a piece Carolina would rather not give up in Necas, a first in a deep draft, Suzuki, who is still a decent prospect, but could be swapped with Rees, and Bokk, who is really just a throw in.

Personally, I would prefer not to trade Skjei, but Chychrun is an upgrade, and 5mil on the bottom pairing is a bit much. I would make an argument that Skjei could get 2 firsts, but at the very least he draws a 1st+ another asset. The first round pick is top 10 protected, and if the pick is in the top 10, the pick transfers to 2024.

For Raanta, it is mainly a cap move, and Raanta probably would get less, but a team looking for a goalie might be willing to pay more. It doesn’t have to be LA, it could be NJ, TOR, EDM, or another team.

For Savard, little value right now, and MTL gets out of that contract for a 5th and retention, with a 3rd going back.

As for signings, Forsberg would be an amazing fit on the Canes, and he fills a big hole for the Canes. I think that is a reasonable contract, but the money can be adjusted a little bit if need be. Nino is probably willing to take a bit of a discount to stay in Carolina and be dominant with Staal and Fast. Domi might take a discount if he likes Carolina enough. And the most controversial contract would be DeAngelo’s. I don’t think the Canes are entirely sold on DeAngelo just yet. I do think he either gets a 2x2 or a 3x3, but anything higher I think the Canes might look elsewhere. I think Carolina goes for a short term, low risk high reward contract, with a buyout not costing too much if things don’t work out. And if things do work out, his contract ends when Morrow likely ends up being brought up. At which point the Canes can resign him or let him walk. I do think calling up LaFontaine next year will be a good move. He has looked decent at the NHL level right out of D1. He is getting time down with Chicago right now, and it should be either LaFontaine or Kochetkov that gets the spot next year. Kochetkov has looked amazing in the AHL so far. Then there is also Makiniemi to consider. I am choosing LaFontaine, as he has played in the NHL, and and Kochetkov and Makiniemi could use a little more time in the AHL before being called up.

  2. 2024 2nd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
2023 First round pick is top 10 Protected.
DET
  1. Skjei, Brady
Additional Details:
Any team looking for a quality LHD who is solid offensively and really good defensively, as well as munches minutes. Can play 2nd pair, but can also play on the top pairing. Detroit is a placeholder team, doesn’t have to be Detroit.
3.
CAR
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (LAK)
LAK
  1. Raanta, Antti
Additional Details:
I do think LA tries to shop one of Quick or Petersen, with Petersen being the main one they try to shop. Raanta is a cheaper and arguably better replacement than Petersen. That being said, it doesn’t have to be LA, but anywhere that might need a backup or 1B goalie.
4.
CAR
  1. Savard, David ($1,750,000 retained)
  2. 2023 5th round pick (MTL)
MTL
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Savard has little value right now, and with a little retention, MTL gets a decent return for a bad contract. MTL adds a 5th to even out value.
5.
CAR
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (BUF)
BUF
  1. Bear, Ethan [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
If a bidding war occurs, which could happen, start at a second, and see if a team is willing to pay a first.

For Buffalo, I would add a condition for if Buffalo makes the playoffs in either 2023 or 2024, the second upgrades to a first round pick in either 2023 or 2024, with Carolina choosing which year. 2023 would be top 10 protected and 2024 would be unprotected.

Savard had a rough start to the season like the rest of the Habs but he’s looked solid since he came back from his injury. Need a mentor for all the young D in the lineup, we’ll keep him.

Why would Buffalo agree to those conditions.

I can see you took your time for this, but this is bad

1- Fair trade for Chychrun

2- No one is paying that price for Skjei

3- LA are fine with Peterson as the starter and Raanta isn’t better than Peterson. Peterson is way younger, have a good mentor in Quick, no reason to do this for LA

4- Savard has been really good after the first 10ish games. He is playing like a #4-5 at 3.5M is a decent deal

5- Bear should remain on the Canes 3rd pairing since you aren’t getting Savard

Skjei would be a good fit in Detroit but there are cheaper options available.

I think you may be overestimating how much you can get for him. This offseason there are several teams in cap trouble looking to unload good defenders so buyers are spoiled for choice and that lowers the price of them. Both WPG and PIT are forced to sell at any price they can get and Schmidt and Pettersson (or Matheson) are expected to be available for as little as a 3rd round pick.

Maybe Savard doesn't have much value in your eyes but he will be invaluable to the Habs next year.
With Petry walking out on the team and Weber early end to his career, Savard and Edmundson are extremely valuable to us.
The kids Harris, Barron and Guhle will need to be mentored during our rebuild so Savard and Edmundson roll will be huge for us.

If you want Savard it will take an overpayment since we would have to find a replacement for him and RD that play the right way don't grow on trees.

P.S. good luck re-signing Deangelo for $2,000,000 (45 points in 50 games so far this year) grin

The 2023 pick wouldn't need any protection as it would not be a top 10 pick if Buffalo were to make the playoffs

Brady Skjei isn't returning no 1st and 2nd round picks, He's okay but he's not that great.

Very good reasoning on the Savard trade thanks for the explanation, however here is why Montreal passes.

1. Savard has been playing better of late.

2. Montreal does not need to move the contract as we have lots of cap space both now and in the offseason.

3. We literally have no one to replace Savard in the lineup right now as Petry wants to be moved and Savard and Barron are our only NHL level D.

Pass on Savard. He cant skate and match our system. He would be a worse fit than Cole and Edmundson
