Petry is a cap dump at this point, you have the second-round pick going the wrong way if you want the Sabes to give up a young RHD who is lighting it up in the AHL.

Everyone here sucks at evaluating Habs players anyway. I guess when you guys will be wrong for the 10th time, maybe then you'll admit you're bad at playing GM.

Good god, every hab fan wants us to take Petry. No thanks, sign an UFA and keep the 2nd.

He is a cap dump, as noted by a fellow hab fan.

yes every Habs fan on here gets their value wrong, don’t think a single trade is viable as they stand here.

Yeah....just like all you haters said Chiarot wouldn't get a 1st(he did), Lehkonen wouldn't get a 1st (he did in Barron) + 2nd, said Kulak wouldn't get a 3rd (he got a 2nd)..........shall I go on ?

Petry was in Norris consideration one year ago....now he is a bum who is a cap dump ? And you don't think the entire team being a dumpster fire under Ducharme didn't have anything to do with it ? Wife and kids leaving Montreal to move back to the Michigan area and him living alone didn't have an effect on him ? GMs most definitely still value Petry........same as us fans

Yea, like those Chiarot and Lehkonen's trade. Habs fans were crazy. Imagine asking for a 1st+ and getting it on both trades.

Like anything else, anyone is worth what someone is willing to pay for them. If Montreal can’t find a buyer for Petry at the price they want they will have to accept what someone is willing to pay. He’s getting old, and he’s got a longer term deal than he should probably have. If Buffalo wants him as a defensive partner for Owen Power I would hope they don’t pay more than a third round pick considering they have to take on that contract, and the risk that he will decline even further.

He's not declining, he had 40 points seasons for the last 4 years (0.5 pts per game), putting him in top 15 for points for a defenseman in the league. Since St-Louis is coaching, he's back to 0.5 pts per game.

The only thing that lower his trade value is the fact that he wants out and every teams knows it. Some Habs fans say we get a 1st and a good prospect for him. I think he goes to Buffalo for their 2022 2nd.

His value is lowered by the fact he wants out, the fact he is 34 years old, signed for three more seasons and costs over $6 million a year. We’re not talking about Nick Lidstrom here. The point still holds that you will only get what someone is willing to pay. If Montreal is not retaining any of his contract don’t expect much regardless of where he goes. Considering there are only so many teams that can afford to take on a $6 million defenseman, especially one that is already 34 years old and has a long-term deal in place. Your potential trade partners are severely limited, so the buyer gets to name the price they are paying and the cap space is primarily what Montreal gets in return.

I doubt 1 team only will have interest. Some will want Habs to retain salary, and some won't.

If there's multiple teams interested, there's gonna be a bidding war. Then Hughes and Gorton will choose what's best for the Habs.

A bidding war for a 34-year-old $6.25 million defensemen in an off-season where half the teams are already over the salary cap? More like Hughes and Gorton will be calling GMs and begging them to make a trade. There are so few teams with the cap space to take him on, and Montreal probably can’t afford to retain on his contract for three years.

They'll listen to offers with retained salary if they're good offers. I guess a 40 points RHD at 3.125M a year would draw interest for a win now team.

Letang is also 34 and having the best season of his career. Weber got to the SCF for the first time last year at 36 years old. Petry still got a couple good season.

Sabre fan here.
MTL will not need to add to move Petry, you are correct
As you indicated, defensemen seem to age like wine.
I think Chara is older than Methuselah and is still in the NHL.
In addition to Chiarot and Lehkonen, I never dreamt Dermott would return a third.

Would you do just Laaksonen?
