Saw a tweet that totally summed up the DJ Smith experience. Said something to the effect of "DJ saves his best lineup decisions for when the season is over".

Not playoffs caliber at all though, not close IMO.

Of course, still missing Pinto and Crookshank though

Joseph has been producing but is he really a pure top-6 forward?
Formenton is ideally on your 3rd line LW
Kelly, Gaudette, Gambrell and Watson can play but should only be 4th line or reserve. You play them at least as possible, only if you have injuries

Tkachuk - Norris - PlaymakingRW (it can be Batherson)
GoalscoringLW - Stutzle - Batherson
Formenton - Pinto - Brown

We need a way above average 3rd line to compete. Look at Tampa, Florida or Toronto top-6 for example... We won't outpower them all the time so we need to have other advantages in the lineup

I think the answer here is that the 3rd line is Formenton-Pinto-Joseph.

I think the top line stays as it has been, and they end up running Fiala-Stützle-Brown on L2, which I think shakes things out pretty well to roll three offensively dangerous lines.

In a perfect world, Ottawa is able to bring in Giroux as well, allowing a Connor Brown trade to work, and giving them options like Tkachuk-Norris-Batherson/Fiala-Stützle-Giroux or even swapping Giroux and Batherson to give Stützle two dynamic weapons on his wings in Fiala and Batherson.

Yes Joseph on the 3rd line RW somewhat makes Connor Brown expendable but IMO this destroys the opportunity to build a more solid team.

People seem to think Connor Brown is easily replaceable but I don't think it's as easy. Who plays all these PK minutes? Who faces top competition night after night? Who scores at that pace at even strength while shutting down the opposition? Who rarely get injured? Who is there last minute to protect a lead? Who steals the puck away at that rate?

Seriously, we could go on. There's a reason that kind of player is always coaches' favorites.

From 2019-20 to 2021-22, Points/60 for Sens forwards at ES , minimum 200 minutes (Mathieu Joseph and Shane Pinto are the highest but very small sample sizes) :

1- Anthony Duclair 2.14 (lol we let this guy go)
2- Brady Tkachuk 2.08
3- Tyler Ennis 1.9
4- Connor Brown 1.9
5- Bobby Ryan 1.83
6- Drake Batherson 1.79
7- Josh Norris 1.72
...
16- Tim Stutzle 1.52

That's out of 26 forwards

I'm not saying I want to trade Connor Brown. I love Connor Brown, and I think I'm even comfortable paying him 5mil on an extension to stay on the 2nd line. My point is that Ottawa needs to make a move for an impact forward like Fiala, and if Giroux wants 3 years to come to Ottawa, the money simply does not work to keep him. You can't pay Fiala and Giroux AND pay Brown his money to play a 3RW role, and in my opinion the Sens aren't in a position to keep a guy like that just to let him walk for nothing.

It works, the problem is paying someone like Tierney 3.5, an injury prone goalie 6.25, a 3rd pairing defensive D-man 4.5, a 3rd line forward 4.75, etc, or bringing useless overpaid vets like Gudbranson, Stepan, etc

Stop wasting money and we'll have well enough money to do everything necessary. Cap will also resume to rise, I saw 1 M$ for each of the next 4 seasons.

Problem is management. Serious teams about winning keep their Connor Browns at all cost (except Leafs who couldn't keep Hyman, Tampa eventually couldn't keep Gourde, etc)

Also really doubt we'd be able to get both Fiala and Giroux, in that case you have already bought Colin White and have 'dumped" Zaitsev or Murray (but it might not be necessary, we can bridge guys like Pinto, Stutzle, Sanderson, Greig, etc). Don't have to give them 8 M$ each right away. By the time they also get costly, Giroux contract has expired, Brown and Zubs don't have much term left, etc.

It is manageable if you are willing to spend to the cap and do what's necessary. You need competent management though
