I’m genuinely curious as to how often undrafted NCAA players that hit the FA market become more than Jimmy Vessey? I feel like I’m reasonably knowledgeable hockey-wise with a ton of stuff, but for all of the hype the end of the NCAA season brings, is it not super rare that these guys become anything more than bottom 6/AHL depth?

Goalies and Dmen tend to have a better chance. Forwards are pretty rare to be more than a spare part.

Boston isn't a candidate for Ben Meyers, It's between Detroit and Minnesota and they basically said that Detroit is the prohibitive front runner for him.

You can count on one hand the good ones. They are always overhyped.

Vesey is actually a success. Which isn't saying much.

Most the guys that have been signed, sure. But it’s a better crop this year as a handful of guys stuck around after Covid. McLaughlin has real potential as 3C. Merkulov is a very high ceiling winger. Bussi is good project goalie. And if they get Meyers, he would immediately become their #1 prospect.

(Also, Vesey was drafted, just not signed)

It's already been reported that it's down to Detroit and Minnesota, Those other teams have interest by Meyers only has interest in either Detroit or homestate Minnesota.

According to basically every insider out there. We should know in the next 2 days. Probably staying home in Minnesota.

I haven’t seen that.
Some MIN reporters have claimed it’s a favorite.
But have also seen Pens making full press.
And he attended Bruins camp.

There are two on there that were drafted then went unsigned. So, as I said, one hand. Don't change the parameters.

Well google his name and it basically says Detroit and Minnesota are the front runners, And he will sign with one of them probably homestate Minnesota as he can play in the playoffs.

Should be easy to cite some sources then. Try one.

Sorry to chime in here but had a serious question. How many fingers do you have on ONE HAND. Humans generally only have 5 fingers (4 and a thumb) a list of 10 players (excluding the 2 that were drafted) still takes more than one hand to count.

He would have had to have been signed before trade deadline to be eligible for playoffs, no?

Off the top of my head - also Penner, Dan Boyle, as of recent memory Noel Acciari, Frank Vatrano. I do see your original point of not getting the highest potential guys, but for teams to be able to get high floor, experienced players to provide depth, create internal competition and maybe contribute is important. Particularly when you’re not giving anything up for them. But I do think at times the hype can outweigh the return from a lot of these players like you said.

Nothing except random blogs suggesting a whole bunch of teams will sign him. Got something credible? Feel free to share.

In fairness though look how far back you had to go. Krug might be the most recent on the list and he had the jump to pro hockey 10+ years ago.
