They are trying to compete still and fletcher wants to retool
They get a ppg player will making room for york
A stop gap defensive dman for the bottom pair
And they get a good center on a tear

Course it’s a weird trade for them but I can see fletcher doing it cause it’s well fletcher

There's still some level of smart asset management to be had. If they move Provorov and have no way of replacing him, now their defense is too poor to make the playoffs anyways, and you've given up 2 younger players who both have term and are currently top-5 skaters on the roster for 2 older pending UFAs and a cap dump while still not being anywhere in the realm of good enough to compete.

I don't mean this to sound harsh, but from the Flyers perspective this is the type of trade that sets you back half a decade as a franchise, and I even really Tarasenko
