Buy Low Candidates

Created by: Lancebmx
Team: 2022-23 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 6, 2022
Published: Apr. 10, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just a couple players I think Detroit could acquire for cheap due to their teams cap restraints.

Other possible candidates for Detroit could be Monohan in Calgary, Kulikov in Minnesota, Fiala in Minnesota but that would probably cost too much still, Schmidt in Winnipeg and Dillon in Winnipeg.
Free Agent Signings
RFAYEARSCAP HIT
2$1,875,000
1$817,300
1$799,600
Trades
1.
DET
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
Additional Details:
Alot of Detroit fans don't like Kerfoot but I think he could help the team this year and then bring back a greater return at the deadline.
TOR
  1. 2022 4th round pick (DET)
  2. 2022 4th round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
His value is probably more but I don't see any teams helping Toronto with their cap crunch.
2.
DET
  1. Brossoit, Laurent
  2. Martinez, Alec
Additional Details:
Detroit gets a veteran LD and a back up goalie, both of which we need next season. Vegas gets 7.5M in cap space, a decent LD prospect and a goalie to play for their minor team.
VGK
  1. Brattström, Victor [RFA Rights]
  2. Viro, Eemil
  3. 2022 7th round pick (LAK)
3.
DET
  1. Pettersson, Marcus
Additional Details:
Probably the easiest defenseman to move for the Pens, they gain cap space and have a spot for POJ.
PIT
  1. Grewe, Albin [Reserve List]
  2. 2022 5th round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
This seems like an acceptable return for both teams. Grewe will be blocked in Detroit.

yeah, the leafs just arnt going to give players away like that and teams 'help' other teams out of cap crunches all the time because they get good players back.

Leafs would easily get more than that for Kerfoot if they decide to trade him. 2nd + a B prospect would be quite easy to get for him. Leafs aren't in a huge cap crunch (minor one) and also teams want to win. Kerfoot at 3.5m is under market value. If he were a UFA a team would give him over a 5m a year.

Kerfoot would be fun on Detroit but he is a UFA at end of the year. So if they extend him it could work or they can plan on reselling at deadline like they did with Leddy. Not bad options in my mind.

The author is right about Kerfoot and Martinez. If teams need cap....and there are more sellers than buyers, the Wings, Leafs and Vegas could do those deals.

And Wings who probably aren't in the playoffs next year have not qualms about helping teams cap for next season....if it helps the Wings in the long run.

Good thoughts Lancebmx.

Kerfoot's contract will be in high demand

He has a 3.5mill cap hit but once they pay him his bonus his new team will only owe him 750k

For teams wanting to reach the cap floor thats a contract they will pay for. Heck even teams looking for some depth he can be a nice piece.

2 4ths aint happening. Easily could get a 2nd + for him rn. Especially when you consider hes on pace for 55 points with no PP time

I like the targets but I think the offers are a bit low. Even with cap issues we aren't the on!y buyers in the league these teams have options.

Like to keep Viro. We are going to have an excess of wingers coming up soon and there will be players we can sign in the off-season that might be a better choice than paying draft capital for kerfoot. Not saying he couldn't help the team out, just personally feel we have better options that won't cost us draft picks.

I've got nothing against Kerfoot, except I don't think Detroit should trade for rentals, we're past that stage.

I'd rather take a flyer on Kapanen if he can be had on the cheap. His underlying numbers are good (more takeaways than giveaways etc.) and we are short of right shooting players. If Fabbri is still on IR when the season starts he'd be a good player to start on 2RW with a third line of Zadina - Veleno - Berggren.

Disagree with your assessment. There's been trades that help out teams that are under the cap crunch where good players get moved.

That Kerfoot trade is the perfect example of the bias that goes around on this site against the Leafs on a regular basis.

It's pretty much a second round pick coming back to Vegas. Viro is developing very nicely and is looking like he could be a bottom 4 defenceman in the NHL.

Not really bias, just seems like every second leafs AGM has Kerfoot being trading for less, so I took that and ran with it.

Kerfoot would likely be traded at the deadline for more, basically a place holder until more players are ready to play in the system.

Yes Cap space is important but having good players is more important and Kerfoot is a good player with a great cap hit. He isn't a cap dump like fans who want to wreck the Leafs think.

I've been a big supporter of Kerfoot, but as I said if the Leaf need cap Kerfoot and Nylander are the two Leafs that could be moved, And if Kerfoot's case, trading cap and not getting any in return is going to be tough this offseason as their are more sellers than buyers. I think the Leafs can make the cap work without trading Kerfoot, but so much depends on their goalie cap[ situation.

Yes, having good players is important but if the Leafs need cap space to sign a goalie they want, there are only two mid to high cap players available to trade Kerfoot and Nylander. So, as I suggest...though I like Kerfoot and he's great value, he just might have to traded. But if the Leafs can find a way to manage their cap without trading Kerfoot, I'm good with that.

Kerfoot is a good player and valuable at his cap hit but he's also not hard to replace with value. Nylander is not replaceable. Kerfoot and Holl will absolutely be moved unless someone offers something insane for a core player. Which is not likely

The market at the time will dictate what the Leafs get for him if they trade him. Toronto fans were screaming at the sky when the ACGMs in here were calling for Dermot for a 3rd and that’s exactly what he went for. A lot of Leafs fan were trading him to Detroit for a 2nd 🤣

Right before trade deadline I was saying Dermott would fetch a 3rd MAYBE a 2nd. I was deferring to a 3rd round pick in my agm's though. It is hard to predict exactly what someone will get though. 2nd vs a 3rd is a difference but it isn't a crazy over valuation of a player.

Kerfoot currently has more value than Dermott did though.
