How close are they to contending

Description
I have a lot of curiousity regarding the up and coming detroit red wings

-Are Edvinsson/Cossa ready? I think Edvinsson is, Cossa isnt.
-Are they ready to buy? I'd say cautiously but they shouldn't be handing out 1st round picks yet
-Should they make a big FA splash? I'd say they could take a shot
-Do they make an offersheet? I think maybe

I think you can give up on the notion of the Detroit red wings signing Patrice bergeron.

Detroit isn't signing Patrice Bergeron, And if Yzerman were to throw an offer sheet it wont be for a winger like jesse Puljujarvi. but a LD like Nicolas Hague.

Bergeron is too old to go to an up and coming contender.

Maybe some sort of a deal for PHI for Couterier (who comes with some concerns: length of term and health), but PHI needs cap space and maybe sort of a middling offer for Coots, reliant on taking JVR possibly?

Something like a Couterier and JVR for Bertuzzi (or maybe one of Suter/Sundqvist) and something like DET 2nd 2022 and STL 2nd 2023. Its a bad offer for a 65+ point Selke center when healthy but a pretty fair offer for a slight risk like Coots and an expensive (albeit moveable at deadline) 1 yr of JVR.

As far as Martinez, I think he has alot more value than that and Vegas probably doesn;t move him

Bergeron isn't signing in Detroit. Well maybe if Detroit offers him north of $15M a season and even if it just doesn't make sense. Bertuzzi is the only player in Detroit's core who isn't 10 years younger than Bergeron. I wouldn't give up more than a 3rd for Martinez because they have other options that won't cost more than a 3rd. Puljujärvi is doing better than I thought he would but with 34 points and 7 of them on the PP, He really isn't worth offer sheeting. Let's be concerned with Detroit making the playoffs before we worry about them contending.

If you wan't to make Detroit a contender you need to develop our prospects, that starts with signing them and giving them a good environment in Grand Rapids to improve.

Söderblom, Niederbach, Cotton, Eliasson, Kivenmäki, Mastrosimone, Tuomisto, Edvinsson, Viro, Johansson are all players that should be in GR next season along with a few veterans to mentor them such as Lashoff and Rowney. Next summer you bring in Wallinder, Buium, Grewe, Gylander, Phillips, Plandowski, Zito.

Then fix the LD in such a way as to give time for the kids to develop before throwing them in at the deep end. Get a rock solid defensive defender to play with Hronek (that isn't Martinez, he's an offensive defender and would be a disaster with Filip), someone like Marcus Pettersson. Get another offensive defender to run our PP2 like Martinez or Schmidt. Keep two of Oesterle, Walman, Juolevi to be #6 and 7.

Get a bona fide 2C that is young enough to be stay his contract time with the team, like Copp.

Be opportunistic and snipe if really interesting players become available either via trade or unqualified RFA or offersheets. Players like Kapanen, Liljegren and the like.

Then just wait for a few years until our kids grow up, keep drafting the same way as the last few years and we'll soon have a dynasty team in the making.

I like Martinez as long as it isn’t too expensive
No on the offer sheet
No on Bergeron
Yes on a UFA 2C if Yzerman can get one to sign
