MAF was 1 year older than him, 1 month after winning the vezina and he got nothing in a trade return. The idea that varmalov and his age and salary (and value of his play) getting more than this is preposterous
First - MAF is 37, Varlamov is 33. They're both older goalies but Varly isn't only a year younger than Fleury.
Second, the Blackhawks got Fleury for a song because everyone in the league knew Vegas was hard up against the cap and NEEDED to move someone with a big AAV. It's a terrible comp for a trade because the Islanders are not in that situation at this point. A better comp might be what Fleury got at the deadline from Minnesota - a conditional 2nd that can upgrade to a 1st.
It's also worth noting how MAF was playing at the time he was traded for that return: .908 SV%, 2.95 GAA, and a -0.1 GSAA.
Varlamov to this point has a .915 SV%, 2.82 GAA, and 6.3 GSAA.
So you have 2 veteran goalies - both are starting-caliber, have extensive playoff experience, and one is both younger and putting up better numbers than the older guy. Why wouldn't you think that younger goalie would be worth at least as much as the older guy in a trade?
