Next year with a Nylander trade

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 15, 2022
Published: Apr. 15, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs fizzle out and they decide to trade Nylander. I see New Jersey as a potential option. Very little cap would need to come back.

This team is quite deep but losing Nylander would hurt for sure. They get to resign Mikheyev and keep Kerfoot in this scenario.

6-8 overall is a bit steep for two years of nylander. The devils would have to be very confident they could extend him.

Definitely but it's what it would take at minimum for the Leafs to move Nylander. If the 6th-8th overall turns into a Nylander type that's a huge win already. I think this is under value for Nylander in terms of assets, but the extra cap makes up the difference.

If the Leafs stumble, I could see this being a very likely trade (or something between these 2 teams)

Nylander is literally a point per game player with a great value contract. I don't get why everyone trades him.

I’d be afraid he’d not re sign with the team in a couple years.

Not sure this move would be smart.

Teams just so rarely move picks in the top ten. I think maybe if it were after next season, when a team could actually negotiate with a player, it might make more sense. A Ryan Ellis type deal.

If the Leafs stumble out of the playoffs in the first round, they will make a change. More than likely at least. This AGM was based on this scenario.

Leafs won't trade Matthews. Leafs can't trade Tavares. Leafs are HIGHLY unlikely to trade Marner (although still possible). So Nylander is the main target IF the Leafs flop out early.

If the Leafs go a few rounds, but don't win the cup, I think they will keep all 4 guys and try again next year with them.

Worst case scenario he rides shotgun with Hughes for 2 years and puts up a bunch of points, helps elevate Jacks game, and then you flip him for a big return on the last year of his deal.

Maybe.

That 6-8th pick is tough to give up in that case.

Honestly I don’t know if you can get more in return than the return in this deal. Risky.

If they lose in round 1, it will entirely depend on how they lose. If it's goaltending, then they will prioritize a new goalie but I expect they keep the core. If Nylander plays like he did last year then I doubt they move him. He's just too valuable to the Leafs, if Marner has a playoffs like he did last year, then he will be traded.

It is risky but there's no reward without risk. That's also just a pessimistic way of thinking, he would get a ton of minutes with one of the best centers in the league. I think it'd be more likely he puts up a ton of points, Devils become a fringe playoff team and he wants to stay.

No doubt he’ll put up a ton of points.

100% I make the deal if I knew he’d be willing to re sign.

I think the Kings should kick tires if he becomes available but a bit nervous he’ll bounce when he hits UFA.

Said this yesterday. Devils likely don't do this because he's UFA in 2 years and they aren't contenders (and won't be without a goalie)

Are you joking? Hagel just went for 2 1sts and 2 prospects.. Nylander for 2 years is worth way more than Hagel is for 3 years. 6-8th overall would be the starting point. Leafs likely move him for a top 4 righty defenceman, not picks. But Nylander is certainly worth a top pick

1. It was three years of hagel
2. It was at 1.5M for three years.

I think you’re really missing what motivated that Hagel trade, and why evidently the leafs offered more for Hagel.

Leafs "stumble" out of the playoffs, so they trade a core piece with the main part of the return being a piece that might help them in 3-4 years.

Makes a lot of sense.

No they didn’t.. that’s why Dubas was pissed. He was never shopping Knies, Chicago made the ask and then leaked it to drum up interest.

Nylander is a great player, and if he was difference between us and playoffs, I'd do it.
But we are not one winger away.
If anything, we are one goaltender away.
Would rather trade a top-5 pick for an elite goalie.

I am flattered that you are comparing the Devils situation to the Lightning situation.
On some nights, I feel the same way!

But we are a developing club with tons of cap space.
Tampa Bay is a contender with no cap space.

He was pissed because he offered it, and fleury nixed it, and then it was leaked.
