Next year with a Nylander trade

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 15, 2022
Published: Apr. 15, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs fizzle out and they decide to trade Nylander. I see New Jersey as a potential option. Very little cap would need to come back.

This team is quite deep but losing Nylander would hurt for sure. They get to resign Mikheyev and keep Kerfoot in this scenario.

Worst case scenario he rides shotgun with Hughes for 2 years and puts up a bunch of points, helps elevate Jacks game, and then you flip him for a big return on the last year of his deal.

Smart guy, the deal will never happen , just in your head. This guy is so good, they put him on the third line, of a CUP team. But yes on your team, could be on your first line.
We have him on a great contact, and can move him up. OR trade him. But he will never be moved just for CAP space.

I am flattered that you are comparing the Devils situation to the Lightning situation.
On some nights, I feel the same way!

But we are a developing club with tons of cap space.
Tampa Bay is a contender with no cap space.

Doesn’t matter. 2 1sts and 2 prospects for a third line player compared to Nylander who’s at worst a 2nd line player.. Nylander gets more than a 6-8th overall pick.

If the Leafs stumble out of the playoffs in the first round, they will make a change. More than likely at least. This AGM was based on this scenario.

Leafs won't trade Matthews. Leafs can't trade Tavares. Leafs are HIGHLY unlikely to trade Marner (although still possible). So Nylander is the main target IF the Leafs flop out early.

If the Leafs go a few rounds, but don't win the cup, I think they will keep all 4 guys and try again next year with them.

Doesn't matter if Leafs stumble in the playoffs or not, the Leafs cap situation with Mrzarek, and needing a good NHL still remains. Heck I would rather see the Leafs win the Cup and Nylander wins the Conn Smythe, so the Leafs would get a better return.
But the reality is few teams have the cap to take on Nylander for just two years, without sending cap to the Leafs. These teams could just sign a very competent UFA cheaper. I'm all for trading Nylander for cap space, but the return isn't going to be that high.

He was pissed because he offered it, and fleury nixed it, and then it was leaked.

It’s been reported fleury was never even asked about being moved to Toronto, that’s just not accurate. It never got that far.

Are you joking? Hagel just went for 2 1sts and 2 prospects.. Nylander for 2 years is worth way more than Hagel is for 3 years. 6-8th overall would be the starting point. Leafs likely move him for a top 4 righty defenceman, not picks. But Nylander is certainly worth a top pick

I don't like the Hagel and Nylander comparsion. Nylander makes 4 times as much as Hagel. Only reason Hagel went for so much is because he's making 1.5M.

Nylander would be a good fit in NJ but as many people said, he's only 2 years from UFA and there's a possibly he walks in FA. Therefore, Devils decline
