Not enough for helly.

I just don't see Winnipeg moving their best player. They aren't in the need of a full rebuild. But I don't mind most of this. I would likely just sign Campbell and not do the Jets trade

Red Wings decline. 2 years ago yes. But Muzzin's body is breaking down. Too many hard miles on those tires. I don't think he'd waive his NTC for Detroit anyway.

well yea the alternative is get campbell and a tandem goalie. The only reason I might see WPG sell is because they are a fringe playoff team in the west as it is, and they're gonna have to make a decision on Scheifele soon it seems. You lose him, Wheeler's not getting any younger, and you're not a playoff team. At that point you may as retool, maybe even move Ehlers at some point over the next couple years with only 3 years to UFA. Hellebuyck's value won't be higher, got 2 years left and if this team is still mediocre he could easily leave. I think there's a strong argument to be made for trading Hellebuyck. But I suppose there is also a strong argument against it - he's among the most reliable goalies you can find.

well 2 years ago the price would have been way higher. for 2 years left on his deal as a guy that can be an experienced defensive mentor to a young D, especially when DET doesn't have a ton of cap commitments over the next two years, I think it would be a great add. But nonetheless another young team would likely take him for this low a price, doesn't need to be Detroit.

yes but turns into 10 team NTC following year. If its clear he's not a fit here anymore he may as well just go to a team he'd accept now rather than wait a year to move. I think a team would pick him up for cheap. Down year with injuries but was arguably our best defenceman last year.

Right but I do think Detroit would be an excellent fit. Miles of an upgrade over DDK for Seider.

There are a lot of veteran LD available this summer with PIT, VGK, and WPG especially needing to shed cap. There are better and also younger and cheaper options for Detroit to choose from.

Maybe but they have Ehlers and Connor as well. They have some good players in their mid 20's still. That wheeler deal looks so bad though.

A cardboard cutout of Aki Berg is miles of an upgrade over Dekeyser. I'm so happy his contract is almost over.

yea. Connor has 4 more years on his deal I'd expect them to keep him around for a little longer and reevaluate a couple of years into their retool/rebuild or whatever you want to call it. But yes I'd sell, you're not going to win with PLD and Morrisey as your #1C and #1D. Sell while your top players have 2 years on their deals and have their best possible return value moving forward.

a lot of GMs value the cup-winning big veteran defensive defenceman, someone would take him. He's a year removed from being our best defenceman (he was in 2020-21 season no doubt), and just had some injury issues this year. A team with minimal cap obligations over the next two years would take a chance on that, no question.

I am a big believer in retools generally being very bad. They just prolong the inevitable. Hanging on to old guys past their prime and hoping they have one more run in them never works. Once your core passes 30 you just aren't going to be good enough. Winnipeg still has a decently young core but they will need to unload wheeler and really fix some mistakes on their defence. Getting the coach would help as well.

Martinez still has great value and has has injury filled years as well. Muzzin will definitely still have a lot of fans in rival GM's. The only reason anyone says he's done and "cooked" (I absolutely hate that), is because he's a leaf. JT has been a cap dump and bad contract the moment he signed in TO despite having a career year in his first season in TO.

right I agree but with Dubois, Morrissey, and Connor under contract for still awhile might be too tempting not to rebuild. But yea I agree with your most valuable tradeable assets primed to be traded soon (Schiefele, Ehlers, Hellebuyck) I'd commit to a full rebuild. Can still hand on to those 3 guys I mentioned to rebuild, the rest of the team just has to be like all young guys or bad veterans to fill the minutes.

JT is one point shy of a point per game but he's "washed" lol. Is he an 11M player? No, but everyone knew that by now he probably wouldn't be. Still worth like 9M and I'd rather have him at 11 than not. People also forget we probably would have used his money to just keep the band together and re-sign Bozak and JVR. I'd rather JT than them.

Like Muzzin's value has depreciated for sure, I didn't love that we signed him to that deal, but like why on earth would a young team not want him to be a mentor to young D and eat minutes? Heck even a playoff race team with some cap space would probably have some interest.

Well, you may be right but trades aren't done in isolation, what's available on the market affects choices and also price.

PIT is forced to trade either Matheson or Pettersson and both of those are more desirable than Muzzin due to age, performance, and resale value.
WPG are trying to both shed cap and make room for youngster and will trade Schmidt. He's also younger and more valuable.
VGK is in deep cap trouble and will trade Martinez, comparable to Muzzin.

The asking price for the above players is lower than what you're asking for here.

Then there's Scandella that will require picks going with him to be dealt.

It's a market well stocked with LD this summer and buyers are spoiled for choice, you may have to lower your price to get someone to bite.

It's just so hard to replace those guys unless they get top draft picks which will be tough to do with Connor Elhers and others still in the lineup. You would be caught in the middle ground were you aren't good enough to win but not bad enough to get top 5 picks.

Matheson and Pettersson don't have the same veteran presence that many younger teams may be looking for, and have far longer term on their deals which might disincentivize teams knowing that they have young stars to sign in 2 years. Same with Schmidt, and none of these players are much, if any, better than Muzzin today. Scandella would not be a team's priority over Muzzin. And yes Martinez is comparable.

Matheson and Petterson have never been more desirable than Muzzin. That's a blatant homer response

right yea I'd trade Ehlers, hold onto Connor for 2 years and reassess, keep Dubois and Morrissey, sell literally everyone else. Keep Dubois, Connor, Morrissey, and nobody else.
