Red Wings might be interested as a veteran partner for a guy like Seider or Hronek, and just to eat some minutes so that you don't have to rely too heavily on Edvinsson if he doesn't look ready for top pairing minutes. I think someone would pick him up at this price for sure.

JT is one point shy of a point per game but he's "washed" lol. Is he an 11M player? No, but everyone knew that by now he probably wouldn't be. Still worth like 9M and I'd rather have him at 11 than not. People also forget we probably would have used his money to just keep the band together and re-sign Bozak and JVR. I'd rather JT than them.

Like Muzzin's value has depreciated for sure, I didn't love that we signed him to that deal, but like why on earth would a young team not want him to be a mentor to young D and eat minutes? Heck even a playoff race team with some cap space would probably have some interest.

Chiarot is the same age and sucks and got a 1st.

right yea I'd trade Ehlers, hold onto Connor for 2 years and reassess, keep Dubois and Morrissey, sell literally everyone else. Keep Dubois, Connor, Morrissey, and nobody else.

Matheson and Petterson have never been more desirable than Muzzin. That's a blatant homer response

especially with the term on their deals nobody wants to be locked in for that long.

100% Leafs wouldn't be where we are today without it. Even then we held onto Rielly, JVR, Kadri which is somewhat comparable.

Long term they probably will end up being more valuable but contractually they don't make as much sense for teams with young players to sign in a couple of years.

yes but turns into 10 team NTC following year. If its clear he's not a fit here anymore he may as well just go to a team he'd accept now rather than wait a year to move. I think a team would pick him up for cheap. Down year with injuries but was arguably our best defenceman last year.

Yeah, seems like the 2023 season is more likely, but I'd also say his demise has been over exaggerated. I just don't think he waives.

yea that's for sure possible. And I wouldn't be trading him because his play has fallen off, more for cap. Because I think Gio will sign for a Spezza type deal, and then Sandin and Liljegren have progressed enough to take some more minutes as well. Could go get a rental D on top of that if needed at the TDL

Matheson and Pettersson don't have the same veteran presence that many younger teams may be looking for, and have far longer term on their deals which might disincentivize teams knowing that they have young stars to sign in 2 years. Same with Schmidt, and none of these players are much, if any, better than Muzzin today. Scandella would not be a team's priority over Muzzin. And yes Martinez is comparable.

The resale value of Matheson, Pettersson, and Schmidt make them more valuable than Muzzin.

For a team like Detroit, who needs help while their prospects mature this means a lot. If Detroit traded for Muzzin they would get two years and then nothing more. If they trade for one of Pettersson/Matheson/Schmidt they have a player they can trade after those two years. With the cap starting to go up again and with the ability to retain they are also likely to get more in return than what they paid.

The lower asking price and the (much) higher resale value is what makes them a better choice for a team in Detroit's situation. Detroit isn't looking to contend for the cup in the next two years, we're still in a rebuild and getting assets back when whoever we get as our stopgap is no longer needed is worth a lot.

He's looked good paired with Brodie. Just has been hurt a lot this year.

or alternatively, nobody wants Matheson in 2 years at nearly 5M because he isn't very good. They can't move him, and face cap issues. If you get Muzzin for basically nothing, there is zero risk that you'll have him under contract long enough to have major cap implications, and have an established, winning, defensive defenceman who can eat minutes as a mentor for the young D and a leader in the locker room

how is that not logic? Pens exchanged cap dumps to acquire Matheson, he's not a very good player to have locked up at nearly 5M for a long term. Is that not correct?

well 2 years ago the price would have been way higher. for 2 years left on his deal as a guy that can be an experienced defensive mentor to a young D, especially when DET doesn't have a ton of cap commitments over the next two years, I think it would be a great add. But nonetheless another young team would likely take him for this low a price, doesn't need to be Detroit.

For a guy who is 33 and can not stay healthy? Ah no. We could get Pettersson or Schmidt for tha semi price and both are younger, experienced and cheaper. Plus Wings not helping a division rival, and espicially Toronto

he's played nearly 50 games this year, first year he's had a regular season injury issue, at least in Toronto. Expires just as you have to worry about re-signing Raymond and Seider (and Edvinsson a year later). Cup experienced partner and mentor for Seider. But ok

Marc Staal is already a leader in the locker room and Yzerman will likely re-sign him for the 1 year/2 mil contract he signed last summer. He's an assistant Captain and an excellent mentor for Seider. Edvinsson will have a shot at making the team next season. If he does make the team then Staal will help him along as well.

What's the big deal here? Not everyone is going to agree with you all the time. You're beating a dead horse. If it's so important you have the last word then have at it. Congrats. 👍

Not a big deal at all. Just said that I'm not using logic, and i'm wondering how its not a logical idea. That's all. I'm not necessarily right, and maybe that veteran presence isn't what the Wings or other younger teams go for. Just a hockey debate that's all, nobody has to agree. Purely for fun.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the Leafs should target Hellebuyck.

Yeah but he's going to be very expensive and most likely cost something you don't want to lose.

Muzzin can not be moved before free agency shakes out. Ian Cole is a UFA will have a lower cap hit (more then likely), the same age, less injury concerns, and same type of physical presents on the back end. CAR is going to be hard pressed to resign him this offseason. Other names that come to mind if this is the impact you are looking for are Nutivaara, Zadorov, and Chiarot. Then there are the trade targets none are the same as Muzzin but offer some of the same things at a lot lower of a cost then this ask.

Doesn't Muzzin have a full NTC this summer?

Yea so many Leafs fans think a declining Muzzin has trade value. And NTC Muzzin isn't waiving for a non playoff team. IMO it's just homer logic. Wings have a thousand better way to spend 5.6m and keep their picks, never mind Muzzin's NTC

Winnipeg is retooling not rebuilding, So they're not trading Hellebuyck if they do it's for a by far better offer then this. And Detroit passes Muzzin can't stay healthy.
