Realistic Ideal Offseason

Description
Kuzmenko seems like a fine gamble out of the KHL given his highly touted shot and cost effectiveness. i'd much rather take a 2.5ish AAV gamble on him than overpay for kane and risk losing our young core pieces as a result.

Cap dump Kassian to Arizona. The yotes could use some guys that are under contract especially since it's going to be a nightmare for them to convince guys on expiring deals or FA's to play in a college arena that junior teams outclass. He can be a middle 6 vet that they need and lavoie helps pile up more young assets.

Barrie I wasn't too sure on where to move him but, he needs to go. 4.5mil for a 3rd pairing dman who's role can easily be filled by bouchard as the top OFD and PP QB on the team is not needed for the oilers. Barrie would garner the best return in a deal with a team that needs a PP QB and some scoring + puck-moving ability on the blueline. Top destinations would be Seattle, Montreal, New Jersey, Dallas or the Island.

The overall forward depth is already very good and with Woodcroft + Manson behind the bench, the team defensive play across the board has been very strong. With Bouch and Broberg having another yr of development under their belts, Keith in more sheltered mins and Kulak assimulating more into the system, the docre can handle themselves in the west.

The biggest question now is what to do in goal. Husso is the clear best option to go after. Unless some other team bails the blues out with their Binnington situation, Husso is likely to test free agency. Given that he doesn't have a very long rapsheet of great numbers he can be signed at a pretty cost controlled number. The lack of a long enough history of strong numbers is a concern but, given what is available at the price point, its a risk worth taking. Anything is better than rolling the dice with a smith + Koskinen/skinner duo again.

Priorities for this team are to lock up at least 1 of JP or Yamo to a longer term deal, not sign a overly big ticket FA with crazy term, move needless money, and get a goalie that can stabilize things between the pipes. The oilers have some solid young guys in the pipeline that might also challenge for roster spots which if 1 or 2 guys can break through in the next year or 2, the oilers will have ample options and ample $ going forward.

this coming offseason is about taking care of the last big piece of the puzzle so that allother moves can be focus on stabilizing what the team already has + adding the right complimentary pieces.

Fine with the contracts handed out aside from Husso.

The idea of him is slowly growing on me as I don't trust Hollands ability to swing a good trade for a starter, and Husso is pretty much the only good free agent. But the max I would becomfortable giving him is Dreidgers $3.5Mx3. The sample size is just way too small to commit anything more. And as we have seen, Dreidgers numbers look a lot different when going from Florida to Seattle. Nurse/Keith/Bouchard/Barrie/Ceci is a pretty big drop off defensively speaking from Krug/Faulk/Parayko/Bortuzzo/Scandella/Leddy

Trust me I 100% agree with you. I just think that the oilers will need to cough up that much in AAV to get him in FA. Oilers not the only team on the block looking for a goalie. I think Husso is that nice middle ground of upside but not as sexy of a name as flower or kuemper so to keep away the big game hunters from snatching him a stupid number. He's a guy that along with skinner can continue to grow with the team and I'd rather risk it on a young goalie looking for a shot than old guys on their last legs. I think Husso would be fine here largely since this group of skaters and coach are making Koskinen and smith look above average which is nuts. I'd say husso would be target #1, target #2 might be campbell (but I don't like him at anything close to expensive) target #2 would be a holtby type as a 1a to skinner 1b.

I wouldn't touch holtby too inconsistent and said he doesnt want to play for edmonton.

agreed, he's more of an option if he is just sitting there late in FA and we need to sign a guy and he's still looking for a team. I've seenon a few pens forums of deals between edmonton and Jarry which for edmonton would make all the sense in the world for so many reasons both in and out of hockey
