If Askarov is Ready

Created by: WN88
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 21, 2022
Published: Apr. 21, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
No reason for predators to keep Saros if they have a younger, potentially better goalie coming up. They may as well trade him now while his value is incredibly high. (THIS IS JUST A HYPOTHETICAL SCENARIO CAUSE I WANT TO SEE WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE ON THE LEAFS - NOT A LEGIT/ACCURATE TRADE)

They won't be trading Saros. He wouldn't be ready for starter capabilities.

NSH wouldnt just ship out Saros before Askarov even plays an NHL game. Itll probably be something similar to what NYI did/is doing with Sorokin/Varlamov where they use both the experienced starter and young goalie at the same time

Yeah zero chance of Poile moving Saros anytime soon. Poile will do just like what Florida is doing with Bobrovsky and Knight and the islanders with Sorokin and Varlamov.

I would love Saros, and it makes sense. Return probably is something working around Nylander

Also why trade a 50 point penalty killer for a 4th liner you could easily get in FA?

I can't be sure but NHL team need two, maybe even three competent NHL goalies. Seems silly that a team would want to depend on a young goalie to play all 82 games.

The difference is that Bobrovsky is signed long-term. I can see them trading Saros a season after Askarov plays a bit of a backup role. I think it would be waste of an opportunity to make your team a lot better in different areas if they just waited until Askarov becomes a full-fledged star to trade Saros.

Because Derek Grant is better looking and has a hotter girlfriend than Kerfoot... confidence boost to the team.

This is just a hypothetical scenario assuming Askarov is ready to play either a backup/1B role in the NHL. The trade would probably look better/make more sense for the Predators if I added a player like Willy, which is probably a more realistic scenario.

Actually as Leaf fan I would love a Nylander for Saros trade.....Leafs would have to add some.

Saros was drafted 6 years before he even challenged for the starting job. Askarov is still quite a ways away and will probably follow a similar path

Why wouldn't you want to sign Campbell and keep those assets? Do you think it's a goalie issue? Freddie is playing pretty darn well in CAR. Maybe a system issue? Forwards need to do more to help defensively?

Yeah as others have pointed out , hopes and dreams isn’t enough to pry Saros away from Nashville. Askarov hasn’t played a single nhl game and likely won’t be starter until near the end of Saros contract. Even if Askarov were ready now, a first and an ok prospect isn’t exactly the compensation we’d be looking for in return and that’s before you add in the cap dump that is Mrazek and for some reason retention on Saros. You’d be looking at nylander or similar asset going back to Nashville. We are fairly set at d but Liljegren might be of interest as well

Leafs wouldn't mind signing Campbell...if they can afford him. IMO it's Nylander that can be traded to create cap space to fill the goalie spots and maybe another position.
Leafs defence right now, is probably in the bottom third of all playoff teams...but so is first place Panthers. Muzzin hasn't played well this year, and Sandin has been injured twice sure hasn't helped.
But really, I think the Leafs defence is good enough. My ideal situation this would be Reilly, Giordano, and one of Muzzin/Sandin on the left side, but only if Muzzin is healthy/competent.
Brodie, Lybushin and the improving Liljegren on the right. But usually a team can't go the entire playoffs without injuries, so at some time Holl and the other Muzzin/Sandin LD would be playing at some point.
No, I don't think it's a goalie issue or even a Dman or team structure issue. Leafs have shown that can win and have the best record in the East against playoff teams this season.
Regardless of what happens in the playoffs this year, in the East, four good teams are gonna be eliminated in the first round.
