I'm tired to see people say Petry is refusing to move anywhere. Comment what you think Petry 15 team no trade list look like. By the way, his family never said they would stay in Detroit if he gets traded elsewhere.

I think the better exercise is to figure out which teams need a 1st/2nd line RD and if they have the cap space to take on 6Mx3 and if they will be competitive in those 3 years. So ARZ would likely be out unless they need the $ for the cap floor.

Smart bet is to follow the money:

Cross off the canadian teams, the California teams, the New York teams, minnesota, and i think philly.

Canadian teams and maybe some bad western teams?

Wasn't there a report that he just wanted to play in the US though? I feel like the problem with moving him is his cap, more than his NTC.

I doubt that matters too much, from what I can tell it's mostly an issue with Montreal not Canada as a whole

1. *pair
2. That’s who would inquire about petry, not necessarily the teams petry would want to go to.

Thats every player with an NTC.

Agreed with cap being the issue over NTC.

Oh I understand.. I’m trying to avoid seeing 1000 ACGMs to the other 17 teams, each. There’s maybe 3 trade partners who would acquire him and then play the game if does he want to go to A/B/C

You're wrong, it's mostly an issue about Canada's covid restrictions.

So what about TampaBayLightning22 saying Petry would decline a trade to Dallas 100 times?

Im wrong? Is it not because of the discriminations towards his wife? Covid restrictions are not going to be that much of a factor next season

lets be real, no one knows that information. there is rumor that petry just wanted to be traded in general. when a players wants to go, it not rare that they are willing to waive to teams that are even on his ntc. and with petry's contract and the we he is playing, it in his best intesrest to not be too picky.

I'll take a stab at this

Toronto
Ottawa
Winnipeg
Edmonton
Calgary
Vancouver
Arizona
Columbus
Seattle
New Jersey
Buffalo
Chicago
Anaheim
San Jose
Boston

That was a tough one but fun to run through all the what/ifs near the end of the list

It’s 100% because of Covid restrictions in Canada.
The discrimination came way after

You're also forgetting to rule out the teams that have no interest in Petry and that list is long. Realistically, the teams he's willing to go to, probably don't want him. Unless he's willing to waive his NTC, the odds of him being moved are slim to none.

Petry give his new list somewhere around July 1st, probably before draft day in his case. He gets to choose 15 team where he refuses a trade. Then, Hughes can negotiate with the 16 other teams. Never said they all want Petry. Just saying that's how it works. I did this post because i'm tired of people saying Petry refuse to waive for this or that team. He can't refuse them all. He could also choose accept a trade to one of the 15 listed teams if he really wants out of Canada.

I think the point that he seemingly wants out of Montreal makes his 15 team NTC more like an 8-9 team one - he'll submit 15, of course, but I'm sure there are a few teams that would be on the list that he would waive for anyway. In the spirit of your question, though, I'll try and map out what teams would realistically have mutual interest in a Petry trade.

The obvious teams that we all assume he doesn't want to go to: Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Arizona, Buffalo, Vancouver
Teams that aren't contenders now and wouldn't swing a deal for a mid-30s D with his hit: Seattle, San Jose, Anaheim, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit
Teams that are basically set at RD and don't need/can't afford Petry: St. Louis, Colorado, LA, Boston, NYI, NYR, NJD, Vegas, Tampa Bay, Washington, Minnesota

That leaves Nashville, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Florida, & Dallas as the remaining spots that *might* take a swing at him.

Nashville has Dante Fabbro, Alex Carrier, & Philippe Myers as their RHD under contract next season, and has $27M in space - so even if they re-sign Forsberg, they can still be considered in play.
Philadelphia is a wild card. Risto is their only right-shot D with significant NHL experience signed past this year, but are they tearing it down now? Petry would work if they want to fast re-tool, not if they're going full rebuild.
Pittsburgh only has John Marino & Chad Ruhwedel signed next year. If Letang surprises us all and leaves the Pens, Petry could become a target for them.
Carolina's more of a longshot - Ethan Bear and Tony DeAngelo are both RFAs, so likely back next season, but still a possible place for Petry.
Florida is the same - they have 3 right shot D on the roster for next season, but both Brandon Montour & Mackenzie Weegar can play the left side, so they have flexibility to take a swing at Petry in their top 4.
Dallas doesn't have a ton of cap room, but might have a John Klingberg-sized hole in their lineup if he walks. I think Klingberg will sign for more than what Petry makes, so you could consider them a possibility.

Not a really enticing list, when you get down to it. There's a couple of teams on that third list that I could see being wild cards as possible destinations, but the ones who have the lineup spot for Petry are also the ones who would need to move cap out to fit him in - and I'm assuming Montreal isn't going to want to take a ton of cap back either.

Petry will consider waiving for any American team, regardless of his NTC, and Montreal isn't likely to send him somewhere he isn't okay with anyway.

The main barrier is the border. It's the biggest obstacle between him and his family due to border restrictions. Even if those are relaxed, there's always the possibility of it tightening up again.
His family traveling domestically is less of a concern. They would likely prefer a team close to home, but even if he's on the west coast, there will be multi-game homestands where they can reconnect for a week or more.

It's a decision they'll have to make when we get to that point. Montreal will present him with the options that make enough sense for the team, even if one is clearly better for them.
Petry's family will have to decide which city works best for them. Distance is one concern for sure, but if it's between a 4 hour car ride or a 4 hour flight, there are pros and cons to either.
Then there's the city itself and how family friendly or convenient it is. Where can they stay, where can they spend their time, how can they get around, etc.

An NTC is an inconvenience more than anything. It ensures the team can't just send a player wherever without their input. If there's trust and cooperation involved in moving a player, NTC's aren't going to prevent a deal that makes sense for both parties.

I think MTL would be open to retain salary or take a contract back, shorter than 3 years. Any team not asking MTL to take a bad contract, or retain salary, could have Petry for a cheap price.

I always thought Nashville was a good fit, as RHD seems to be one of their weakness. He would fit well with one of Josi or Ekholm. Since they have cap space, i think Habs don't retain on Petry. But the thing is, they traded Ryan Ellis last summer, not sure why they would trade for Petry.

I agree Pens and Stars would have interest if they lose their own RHD to free agency (Letang and Klinkberg). Then Habs wouldn't have to retain salary, since they'd have cap space with those departure.

MTL would definitly have to retain salary for a trade with Florida, but i could see them swing for Petry, try to keep their Stanley cup window open for a couple more years.

Philly should rebuild, but they never will. But i'm not sure they trade for Petry, they have Risto and Ellis signed long term on RHD.

I could see Buffalo and Columbus as potential destinations, if the price is reasonnable. MTL wouldn't have to retain or take cap back. While they're not contenders, they both could add a top 4 RHD. If Petry wants to be close to Detroit, and doesn't care about winning in the next couple years, both teams makes sense. He could then be traded on his last year of contract to a contender, as a rental.

Like you said, a couple more teams could be interested if Habs retain half Petry's salary. A 40+ points RHD vet, on a retained 3,125M for the next 3 years, could draw interest from contender teams.
