The description makes it sound like you think they’re retiring, rather than going on LTIR.

0% chance that happens. I think that would cost Price 31.25M, and Weber, 6M. They aren’t doing that. There is a chance that neither play again and spend the next four years on LTIR, but LTIR doesn’t exactly equate to “free cap space.” It can be used, so it is very useful, but it isn’t exactly the same.

With $8M in cap space It'd be wiser to just keep Armia and keep those picks, and maybe buyout the next offseason

Petry's wife is from Houston nowhere near Dallas. His wife and kids are staying in the Detroit area so he's not waiving to be 1,000 miles from his main home. His wife has lived in Michigan for over 17 years now. Michigan is home for her not Texas anymore.

LTIRetirement will also not work for the Habs with both or even just Price. Since you can only be over the cap by 10% in the offseason (8.25 this year) you would have a team cap of about 72 million not 82.5 million if both wound up on LTIR. And that is before accounting for any bonuses from this year that will roll over.

    From CapFriendly's LTIR FAQ's :

Can LTIR be used in the off-season?
Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.

Well, she lived in MTL for the last 7 years, so she could follow her husband in any US city...

Trade to Detroit seems incredibly unlikely. Houston is as close as they will get and of course the kids can always change schools and they can visit the grandparents on the weekends or whatnot. All players make these sacrifices. She just wanted to get away from Canada.

He's been saying that same sentence for the last 6 months. Petry will be traded to a team not on his 15 no trade list, and his family will follow him to that city, like they did for MTL.

Sure teams are supposed to be just 10% over the cap, but I'm guessing that is for active players. The had 5.25m Lupul and 5.25 on LTIR, that was 10.5m when the cap much lower. The Leafs still had signed players that played...andwherf very close to the cap for years.. Teams certainly aren't handcuffed by the cap if they have LTIR players

You're correct about the bonuses, when a team is able to pay them is affected by the usage of LTIR.

But here on CF. so many think short term LTIR or retirement is the fix to help a teams cap.

Houston is a lot closer to Dallas than Montreal is to Detroit, why wouldn't they just move back to Texas? No where has it ever said that the Petry's wouldn't buy a new in season home where ever Jeff was traded. In fact by all reports Petry's request is to go to ANY American team. Now he likely doesn't waive for rebuilding teams like Arizona or Buffalo or Chicago but he really does not care beyond that.

There's gotta be some rule about it. If the player can no longer play can they really sit in LTIR? Don't they have to be approved each year?

She's away from Canada living in the Detroit area where she's been for 17 years. I'm pretty sure she has no desire to move back to Texas for 3 years when their main home is in Michigan where Jeff grew up.

I'll admit I'm confused about this. If the player has no hope to continue to play, does the league have a history of approving their LTIR just to appease the PA?

I'm just gonna respectfully say that I disagree with your premise and leave it at that. Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong. We'll know in a few months.

They can approve the LTIR, but there is an upper limit to the LTIR/bonus cushion. LTIR and the bonus cushion allows teams to exceed the cap by a certain amount. The other poster seemed to think it was 10%, and I have no real reason to think he’s wrong, though I’m pretty sure it used to be 15%. So if the cap is 82.5M next season, a teams limit on LTIR/bonus that they can exceed the cap by is 8.25M. Price is more than that, so it would only provide partial relief. I think it makes more sense that the actual number is 15%.

I guess I don’t really know what you’re asking here. Yes, a player can go on LTIR if they can’t play. But LTIR isn’t unlimited cap space.

Sorry, I'll clarify: When a team submits a player to LTIR, doesn't this kick off an approval process that the league evaluates on a case by case basis? In those scenarios, does the league always approve to appease the PA?

That started for the Leafs in 16-17 and they only used 63,299 in LTIR they simply had a very cheap team that year. Then they used 5,763,198 in 17-18, so they never came close to the 10% LTIR cap.

So if the cap is 82.5M next season, a teams limit on LTIR/bonus that they can exceed the cap by is 8.25M. Price is more than that, so it would only provide partial relief. I think it makes more sense that the actual number is 15%.

Once again what I'm asking is: why do you assume the LTIR solution is possible. You are assuming the league will approve all LTIR requests, I am wondering what you are basing that on?

    Thats for the off-season though.

There is no limit in season as far as I can tell. Hence the 17 million over the cap for the Lighting last season.
