that's an insane price for getting a 36 year old Blake Wheeler, and it doesn't even accomplish the goal of saving cap space by moving Josh Bailey (Isles are sending out $9.425M in current hit and taking back $9.9M). Isles get older, slower, worse cap hits, and get to give up a first and two seconds? No thanks.

The Colorado trade doesn't come close to Scheifele.

No chance the Jets retain on Wheeler and take back that much cap. It defeats the purpose of moving him and no one is moving their first for Wheeler.

COL declines, not looking to add cap when we have pending UFAs to sign.
Ill keep 23yo Girard at 5mil over 30yo Schmidt at 5.95mil
2023 is a deep draft and COL cannot afford to move the 2023 1st after giving up the 2022 1st and 2nd (cupboards are getting thin).

Still feels like a bad deal. Isles are giving up one of their few under-25 forwards in Beau, and while Wheeler is better than Bailey, he's also older and more expensive. I don't think it would be crazy to say that they're fairly close in value (Bailey turns 33 before next season, owed 2x$5M vs. Wheeler turning 36, owed 2x$8.25M), with those 4ths probably making up the difference in value for the Jets. That makes the rest of the trade Beauvillier & a 1st for Brenden Dillon, which is just a crazy overpay.

I think this is the rare trade where both teams wind up worse off because of it - Isles are giving up ~$1M of their summer 2023 cap room when they need to re-sign Barzal and Wahlstrom, and Winnipeg is giving up their captain for a player who probably produces at 70% of what he did.

I'd do those trades, but Colorado, and the Islanders wouldn't.
