As a Canucks fan, this is my ideal scenario. This team has shown what they can do with Bruce as coach (I'm 100% sure we would be in the playoffs if we had fired Green before the start of the season), and keeping the roster almost the exact same as it is right now, I think this is a playoff team

Good post. But of course dealing with two UFAs. Does Miller really want to stay in Vancouver? Could Horvat get more elsewhere and would he like a change also.

Cmon man, Im as big a fan as there is but this roster as currently constructed is NOT a great team. This roster is a playoff bubble team, defence doesn't transition the puck well enough or faster enough and the forward group is too slow. You have (maybe) 1 good skater per line (Bo, Garland kind of, MIller kind of and Highmore). This team is "all in" and are a playoff bubble team. Committing 8m to a 30 year old for 6 years isn't the play this team can make with OEL, Dickinson, Myers and Poolman on the books.

Look closer at the roster. Poolman and Dickinson are bought out, and Myers is in the last year of his contract.

If the year taught us anything, the biggest problem was that Green wasn't the right coach for this group, and that the roster construction isn't as big a problem as we thought.

I would keep Miller, reason being is that you have youth in Petterson, Hughes and Demko. If you move him, you really are taking that proverbial step back, when you should be building around that young core instead of wasting more of their time here. If you need to delete, it makes more sense to move on from Boeser. I really don't care how old Miller is. Guys can still play in their 30's, the idea that they can't is just recency bias borne of the Ericsson contract.

They could afford to add a half mil to each to entice them to stay. And the 8 year commitment to Bo should help there.

Anyways, with all that said, this was just a way to show people that it can be done and still leave them the flexibility to improve. Myself, I'd be a lot more aggressive.

I have no doubt that Miller is going to be good into his 30s but its the cap thats the issue with already having the OEL contract on the books. My response was actually in response to tydini11. "Keeping the roster the exact same as right now" Nah thats not the move, this exact roster aint it. Forwards are too slow and D cant transition well enough. Those need to be addressed and the best way to do it is with someone who actually has value (Miller). You move him for a speedy NHL roster player in the 23-27 age range, a legit RHD prospect to play with Hughes for the next 10 years and a pick.
