That Kadri contract screams cap dump to Arizona in 3-4 years

Treliving isn't retaining on Monahan plus giving up a 4th and 6th round pick on top of it, And no way is Lucic waiving for Arizona for a buyout purpose he has a 10 team trade list. Pretty sure a team on his list can afford him for one more season. 20 man roster and 0 cap space for injuries is a recipe for disaster.

Is everyone on this board stuck in 2017? Monahan is trash, barely worth 2M let alone 6.5. If all it takes is a 4th and a 6th to trade Monahan at 5M, the Flames take that and run.

Hip injuries are tricky for hockey players, At the worst he winds up on LTIR. if he's fine maybe Treliving attaches a 3rd rounder to him but that's about it.

M NTC Lucic doesn't waive to team with cap, just to be bought. UFAs don't leave because they "want out", it's just is that have a choice of 31 other teams.

Negative interest in Kadri and he also hates Calgary so hard pass on that. If Johnny leaves then Calgary should not trade Monahan

I’m pretty sure he only declined the trade to Calgary a few years ago because he didn’t want to leave Toronto, not because he has anything against Calgary in particular. I don’t hate the idea of bringing him (or Trocheck) in though, if Johnny leaves we should be using that cap space to bring in a good 2C and push Backlund down, we do have a lot of wingers (Tkachuk, Mangiapane, Toffoli, Coleman, Pelletier, and Dube are more than capable of being our top 9 wingers). This price is probably too high for him though. And I wouldn’t touch Domi.

I disagree, If Johnny leaves this team is not a playoff team even with Kadri, Trocheck, etc.

Our defense and goaltending will be just as good. And even if replacing Gaudreau with Trocheck or Kadri caused our goal differential to drop by 50 (which it probably wouldn’t) we’d still have the best goal differential in the division lol. We’d just maybe have fewer blowout wins, win more games 3-2. Plus I think Pelletier makes the team next year, and he has top 6 upside, and while I think Coronato is going back to Harvard, he’ll be joining in a year or two and be very good also. We do have a future even without Johnny (our top pair and Kylington are still relatively young, as are Tkachuk, Lindholm, and Mangiapane, and those are our some of our most important non-Gaudreau players, who fill major spots in the lineup). We can definitely restructure and hang around. We might not win the division next year, but we’d be right back in the hunt the following year as Pelletier grows (and if Dube can turn this recent hot streak into a true breakout).

If you are fine with satisfactory then sure. I think if Gaudreau leaves they should 100% retool around the current young core they have now and not waste cap space on someone clearly over performing like Kadri. Run out Monahan's contract and retain on him at the deadline to an actual team then plan for Coronato + Pelletier + Zary + Wolf (+ maybe Kerins). The team is still for the most part young enough to do a 2-3 year retool

I just don't think we're bad enough to do a proper 2-3 year retool under the Sutter system. A really solid top 4 D, top 5 starting goalie in the league, 40 goal Selke calibre centre, 100-pt power forward, and 3 other 20-35 goal guys? I think the floor is playoff team, especially in the Pacific. Might as well bolster the C depth (probably the only identifiable weakness is 2C) and stay decent. Defensively oriented teams go on runs every year, so all we gotta do is get in. And then eventually the reinforcements will come.

Thats why I think loosing Johnny is game changing. There is a reason Tre said he will move heaven and earth

Yeah, I don’t think we do though. I think Treliving goes full ACGM and trades every 1st before letting Johnny or Chucky walk (not that he’ll need to lol)

Honestly I think with the teams success this year they will both want to stay. If this year didn't show success then I think they would have both tried to leave sooner than later

Better move is to take on a good buyout with he Monahan trade.

White for Monahan plus a small sweetener. White buyout is only $875k for 5 years. But Ottawa does not need another centre so you'll have to give them a reason to make the deal.

Other destinations are the same - send Monahan somewhere he can play, get a new chance to play and recapture his game. Lots of teams for that like Seattle, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Nashville, Dallas, LA, SJ - but everyone will want more than a 4th and a 6th to take the risk or will want to dump something
