Play the Kids Make a Run at Playoffs

Created by: rednwhite

Description
Not likely to happen but I would love to see the young guys given a shot. Let them learn on the go and if it doesn't go well we can always add another high pick. Sign some free agents next offseason and get ready for a run at the playoffs in 2023-2024. Also I think the Tampa trade could work? They add two young cost controlled centers and a pick. I'm not sure of Cirelli's exact value. I can't see them having the room to give him a long term extension. 4.8 is a little expensive for a 3C. Let me know what you think.

I can't imagine Tampa considers that for even half a second. It's a major downgrade for a player that you'll have multiple years of control over.

Edmonton absolutely matches that offer sheet. If you want to have a successful OS, you pretty much need to go crazy overboard.

I am not so sure that they decline immediately. Suter likely matches Cirelli's production on that 3rd line at a fraction of the cost. Suter had 7 less point on a significantly worse team. Suter is only 1 year older then Cirelli as well. Also is Cirelli not a UFA in 2 years? Veleno is a former 1st rounder finishing his 1st year in the NHL. Seems like a reasonable deal for both teams to me.

I assumed Ken Holland gives Kane a massive deal and can't afford JP but I agree they will likely match it if they can.

There's a difference between offensive production and overally production though...Cirelli has had Selke votes in each of his 3 seasons, including his rookie year. He's one of the top possession players in the league. Suter and Veleno are merely depth players. Veleno has a bit of upside, but he also hasn't been able to steal more minutes on, as you said, a signifcantly worse team. Tampa has shown that they don't give two poops about picks or prospects. Cirelli's value >>>>> this package.
